I offer balloon sculptures after my magic show at birthday parties. Very often I get a request (usually from a wide eyed 4 or 5 year old) for a cat. I've searched around, and can't find a one balloon cat. Does anyone know how to twist one of these elusive (to me) creatures. I say one balloon because I can't say balloon...wait, that's not right . No, I say one balloon because I just want something quick that I can create a lot of if asked.
Thanks, Scott .

I just make a animal that could either pass for a dog, mouse, or cat, depending on how I draw the face. Works for me.

I know a great one balloon cat. Email me at steve.vaughn@analog.com and I'll do a drawing how to do it and send it to you on an excel file.

The basic animal shape with a short nose, short ears and a long tail is what I've used in the past.

I try to talk them out of it by claiming that the cat's claws always breaks the balloon...tongue in cheek...then I put a teddy bear head on a basic short dog body with a long tail. Close enough.

Rick Mohr has a 1 balloon cat in one of his books. I usually do the same as Skip;bear head on dog body. The other difference being I put the eyes at the side for the bear and on the top bubble for a cat. Oh yeah and I give it whiskers, too.

George...What do you do to keep the Permanent Sharpie from smearing to hands and such? It just doesn't seem to dry on the latex so I stopped using them.

That's what I use for the cat...it's a bear head, be sure to make the center (forehead) section of the face slightly shorter than perhaps for the average bear, and be sure to do the artwork...that's what really sets the cat apart from all the look-alikes. Whiskers, the right eyes, and stripes all over, especially up the tail.
The "Sharpie smearing" problem might depend upon what type Sharpie (the new liquid Sharpies) you use, how old it is and what brand balloons you use. I always blow lightly on the surface of the balloon if there's a lot of art involved. I don't generally have a problem with it, even here where the humidity is usually VERY high. Steve |

The new clickable sharpies are nice because you do not have to play with the caps.

I forgot where I learned it now. Maybe it was on Balloon HQ but I do a one balloon cat that looks like a panther/tiger. I do it in pink for the pink panther and in orange for the tiger. It really looks good and gets great reactions. I'll have to find it now.

I suck at balloons yet I do a cat that looks like a cat and a tigger that looks like tigger...bear heads on cats....blasphemy! What next? Shifting the head and back feet of a wiener dog and making it a giraffe?

Whoa, I posted this request and then got to busy to check responses the past couple of days. Thanks though. Steve, I'll email you. I'd love to be able to make a cat that looks like a cat.
As for sharpies and faces -- I never do that. Too much messing around for my taste. I'd rather have the basic shape look like what it is. Although, I do make a 4 balloon Pink Panther and Silvester the Cat that I draw the face on. But I don't make those for birthday parties. Scott .

Thanks again for all the responses. Steve V sent me his version and it looks very good. It is sort of a modified teddy bear head, but more cat-like. Oh, and if I draw on the eyes and whiskers, it looks really good. So, I may just start doing that after all. We'll see.

I use Dewey's tiger.Make the nose small and the eyes big, don't forget the claws and whiskers.Curve the tail with no puff.

Contact Tom Vorjahan or Daniel Herron (aka The Balloon Guys) They have awesome lecture notes and DVD's. They make the balloon designs at IBM and Magifest each year.

They dry quickly and are permanant on latex. They also don't "re-wet" if you deflate the balloon. Great for putting a face on a bee body the putting it inside an 11" clear. For a cat I usually turn a teddy bear head backwards and put it on a standard dog body with a long tail. To further sell the cat image I twist the ears an extra quarter turn (makes them more pointed) and place a mouse made from a 160 in the fold of its mouth. Their cat caught a mouse.

There may be a one balloon cat in Richard Levin's 11 Balloon Menangerie. A good book. Could be out of print.
