I just got a set of Daryl's color changing knives, and the routine/explanation are on his new Fooler Dooler DVDs.
But I'm having trouble with the paddle move. Sometimes it works flawlessly, other times when I try to turn the knife, my fingers just slide off the edge and the knife stays in the same position. I can't figure out why it works sometimes and not others. My hands aren't particularly oily or anything, so I'm at a loss. Any tips? |

One of the best written descriptions, with accompanying photographs, of the paddle move is given in "Merrill's Book of Knives". It discusses the relative merits of a vertical versus horizontal paddle move and explains precise finger positioning. If you already have a set of color changing knives, then this book will be a valuable additional resource.

It has to do with finger placement, which is a little different for each person. When I have trouble with consistency, I experiment with finger positions and analyze what seems to get the result I'm looking for. I theorize a great deal as to what will work in order to give myself an idea of what to experiment with. It would be hard for me to comment further without actually seeing the hand position.

Perfect. I just ordered the Merrill book to see if I can figure this out once and for all!

You might want to try Whit Haydn's video called "The Intricate Web of Distraction."
He teaches the color changing Knives routine and also explains the moves in detail. Hope this helps. vinny |

I believe Camirand sells a routine called "Keys to the Kingdom" by David Acer which has an excellent description of the V-H paddle move.

I have Daryl's color changing knives and I think the routine is outstanding. However, the design of the knives themselves for the paddle move is not very good at all. Even though I put in some decent practice time the knives got hung up during the move a little to often for me to perform this in the real world. The paddle move is one of the easiest sleights to do, yet I had problems consistently doing the move. Other magicians that I know agree with me on this. I'm not saying it's impossible, because it works very well for Daryl,I just think there are better knives out there.
I use Joe Mogar's knives now and was able to do the move effortlessly from the first time I picked them up. There is a huge difference. Rich B. |

Darn that Daryl and his amazing skills!!! Rich, as you seem to like Daryl's routine as much as I did, have you found a similar set of knives (color wise) that are easier to handle?

Does anyone know there is a trick out that uses the concept of the poker chips and the paddle move? Very cool.

I had the same problem with my set of knives. This was particularly frustrating because, of course, the move is so easy to do with two paddles at once using normal paddles! What I finally realized was that I had to grip my knives above the shiny metal end of the knife. Besides that, be sure to have your thumb and index finger gripped more at the sides of the knife rather than the knife's top and bottom. Have your index finger pressing against the lower left hand corner of knife's profile while your thumb exerts pressure against the upper right corner of the knife's profile. Let me know if this works for you. It finally solved my problem. How many colors are in your knife routine?

James, two knives, 3 colors. Thanks for the finger placement ideas. I'll give 'em a shot. Been trying everything I can think of and it's a 50/50 crap shoot so far... haven't given up yet!!

I have not found knives that can still use Daryl's presentation.
I use Joe Mogars knives and I use just 2 knives. One knife is Red/White with a small portion of Red showing at the bottom. After a few color changes(my thumb covers the small portion of red on the white side)I offer to "Show how it's done" by trapping the color changing process. Then as the knife passes through my hand, it changes from Red to White but I stop before the knife comes completely out of the other side and put my thumb over the point were the 2 colors meet. It looks as the knife only changed part way. This usually gets a great reaction. Then a very visual change back to red. Then a pass to the other hand... sprinkle a little woofle dust...and the knife SHRINKS to 10 times smaller(2nd knife). I just added the kicker ending and also got the small knife from Joe Mogar. I had the same problem with the design of the Daryl knife set. I liked his routine but not the knives. So I painted my own! I have an old black/white set of color changing knives from the late 50’s. I bought a little bottle of black and a bottle of white enamel paint and mixed up a gray color. I painted a little less than half of one (white) side black and made a gray finger print in the middle. Viola! A custom set that uses a knife that I am very comfortable with since I have been using it for well over 30 years and can use with the Daryl routine.
It doesn’t take much to paint a knife handle. Heck a friend of mine makes his own knives using fingernail polish as the paint. It has a deep sheen look to it.

Harry,
I bought a second set of those old black and white knives off Ebay recently with the plan to paint them so it looks like the color change was interrupted. However, love your creative idea of the thumb print! Is it possible to buy Daryl's routine without his knives? Is the routine in a book somewhere? (By the way, I'm going to be buying the McBride's tapes as you advised!) Best, Jim

Whew, glad it's not just me having trouble with Daryl's knives. But yeah, I love the routine as well. James, the routine is available on one of his Fooler Dooler DVDs (I THINK it's vol 1, but check the contents on the box).
And yeah, it's two knives... one red/yellow. The other yellow, with the back side half yellow, half red, with thumbprint in the middle a nice shade of orange. Same effect. I love the idea of changing it to a smaller knife at the end. Nice touch! |

A written description of Daryl's color changing knives routine is in his "New Millenium World Tour" lecture notes.

Thanks for the routine sources. I'll have to check it out. I'm looking for a good knife routine. Sorta got one myself but it's not quite there. Want to see other people's ideas. Please let me know if the finger placement description helps.

I have Merrill's book on knives and his horizontal paddle move really gave me new insight on the paddle move. Our eyes actually follow vertically a lot easier than horizontally. Just like Merrill describes.
Hi MxJoKeR, I have been working on a routine where I have a red poker chip and a blue poker chip in my pocket and when I rub the red knife on the blue poker chip the knife absorbs the color and changes. Similar to Merrill's Silks and knives where the knife absorbs the color of the silk.
Jim. Thats me on the left,Everyone should know the other guy!

Try soldering a clip to the side of a cigarette vanishing pull. The clip holds the small knife.
You have plenty of misdirection to get ahold of the gimmick while opening your other hand to show the knife. Then insert it into the pull, free up the small knife and vanish the regular sized one. Your knife apparently shrinks and you're clean at the end. Yes, I know you could use lapping or sleeving but this method works for me and you can do it while strolling (standing). Sid
