I hope some of you watch this show. In my opinion it is fantastic. If you have not seen it and you have show time find the ESP episode. It talks about RVing etc. It is very interesting no matter what side of the fence you sit on. Althoug maybe a little painful for those that believe in RV.
Anybody else watch this? |

Hah I just watched it and it's one of my more favorite episodes. However it has me desiring a hypnodisk!
Will you, won't you, ESP with me?

Thanks to Jerry Andrus for perfecting hypnodisk. It was another great show...there have been so many in the series. I was surprised to see someone I knew well on the having-fun-made-of-them side of it but this person wasn't the huckster pandering to the superstitous or paranoid either.

Hi
I watched both seasons 1 and 2 of the show too and loved it. While I don't 100% believe everything they say, a lot of the stuff they talk about are quite interesting Phil |

I wouldnt say that they are 100% correct on everything, but they are certainly more convincing and give actual facts. That says a lot more to me than those on the "other side".
I want a hypnodisk also. I want to go back to 5 million BC. I found that RV session intersting. Showed me what a bunch of Bull S+++ that all is. |

Was this a new episode? I didn't think the show was returning until April. Did this episode come from season two?
Thanks, Ben Blau

I find them quite entertaining to say the least. I like the show as well.
BUT I would caution against using them for FACTS. They are entertainers and are expert at choosing what facts to build up and which to ignore. I am not saying anything except they mean to entertain, and they do it quite well. But for scientific validity, look elswhere.

I like much of what Penn & Teller do, I LOVE their current stage show, but I wonder if much of their Skeptical work on television is just preaching to the already converted. I wonder if their "in your face" style of debunking actually wins any converts from the "believers'" or the undecided.
If any of this is at all true, and if P&T realize this, then could shows such as BULLS**T not be seen as purely a way to get exposure and make some money under what might be considered false pretenses? - entity

I think the idea in show business is generally getting exposure and making money, which is not a bad thing. (Those aren't the only elements, but I think most entertainers are happy to get exposure and earn money). What are the potential "false pretenses"? |

I'm not at all sure I'm right about any of this. I'm just putting it out there for discussion.
I'm also all for making money and for entertainers getting all the exposure that they want. I'm just wondering if P&T's method of debunking is really doing any good APART from the afore-mentioned money and exposure. It seems that they profess to be doing their BULLS**T series, at least in part, to enlighten and educate. If their audience is already on the same page, what value does the debunking have? I'm wondering if there is a more effective approach to doing the same thing, that might actually influence people who hold different opinions than P&T? - entity

I still don't get what might be considered false pretenses--it seems to me they are very straightforward about what they are doing.

In addition to making money for P&T and Showtime, and getting "exposure," many would say they are also offering entertainment. I would bet that P&T would like to have an audience that didn't only consist of those on the same page already. I'm sure they would like to have as big and audience as possible, and not just preach to the choir. Quote:

I think a more diplomatic, nuanced, less over-the-top approach would be more effective, but that might make for a boring show that no one would watch. Influencing people who hold opposing opinions is no mean feat. |

I agree with your last statement. I wonder if there is a creative way to achieve this AND be entertaining.

In my opinion the show is entertaining, but I agree that they're probably mainly preaching to the choir. I'd like to see Messiah; I've heard it was good.

They do present some "facts". It is certainly entertainment etc. I don't think they would "convert" the faithful of either side, but they can help educate people that are in the middle. They easily could push them in either direction. In the ESP episode they show the people trying to RV. It appears to be the method taught on the RVnetwork (or whatever that is called). It was just funny to see out of all those people not one of them was even close to "rving" the target. The group metal bending was priceless as well.
The episode that just cracked me up is the one where they feed the "best" food to those people. They are serving them meat from a frozen dinner and the people are talking about how tender etc the meat is. Shows you how stupid humans can really be. Just because it is fancy etc and says its the best does not mean that it is. |

How about the episode about bottled water, where they gave people in a fancy restaurant taste tests, comparing "different" "specialty" waters, which were actually all from the same garden hose behind the restaurant. There's a useful lesson there.

Why will Teller speak on this show?
I think that the psychic episode can help educate a lot of people on the scam behind it. I thought they presented that material very well. |
