I have a 1st edition of Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic, #1, and I was working through some of the effects. I got to page 170, then the next page is 107. The book goes from page 1-170, 107-138 repeated, then page 203 to 520 (end). It is missing pages 171-202. Has anyone else come upon this problem?

This particular volume that you have was not done correctly at the bindery. It has missing signatures. I doubt that is correctable today.

Volume 1 is loaded with good box magic props you can make yourself. They are not just for silk tricks.

Good Luck!

Gonzo,

Have you tried contacting Harold Rice's daughter, here on The Café? Her name here is "Rice". She is very approachable and helpful. Perhaps, she could send you copies of the missing pages.

Having owned a printing business in Tuscaloosa when I was also at the University of Alabama (like Harold Rice), I'm afraid that there is another book-holder somewhere that has two of the signatures you are missing, but not the one that you got two of. In the binding process, someone got interrupted. However, there are usually exactly enough "parts" to make the books. The props for the tricks on the pages you are missing are still available. You would want to see these in Rice before buying them.

Good luck!

Gonzo,

Have you solved your problem yet? I'm so sorry that you are missing pages. I do not have any more of Volume 1, but since you unfortunately received one that was not complete, I would be happy to copy the missing pages for you free of charge, if that is of any help. Please advise.

There you go, Gonzo! Did I not tell you that you are dealing with a lady? Beat that, and it's from the author's daughter, too.

She still has some Rice silks, also. Go for it!

Congratulations! You're a bigger winner than you thought.

Class never goes out of style.

Ruth, any plans for a reprint in the near future?

Silk King Studios will not be reprinting any of Dad's Encyclopedias. Dad sold the rights to Hank Lee before he died. Hank, among others, sells the reprints.

Ruth, just wanted to let you know that I'm now the proud owner of a set of Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic, Vol 1-4. Started reading volume 1 last night and was impressed right of the bat by your Dad's attention to detail. His Encyclopedia is truly a timeless masterpiece.

Regards,
Bob

Bob,

Thank you so much for the kind words about Dad's wonderful contributions to silk magic. I spent many a night watching him write the manuscripts with one hand, while holding the magic effect in the another. At the same time, Dad, my mother, the "Silk Queen", and I watched Johnny Carson (yet another magician!).
