Except for at magic shops, cotton rope has become difficult to acquire in my area.
Anyone know any tricks with non-cotton ropes or good alternatives? The only one I've seen is Bob Kings "Radical Rope". Nylon, Polyester, Polypropylene (Poly) seem to be the only type around anymore. |

Bob Sanders and I have been talking about cut and restored rope when ever we could for more than a year. BIG LOT'S has 7/32" diameter, 100 feet long soft cotton core rope for $.03 a foot. They call it clothers line, and you can buy it in 100 foot length's for $3. Last November I bought 20 bundles 2,000 feet, a shopping basket full of this clothes line stuff for $60 that I'm still using. Jaz what ever happens don't tell anybody what I just told you, or Big Lots will catch on, quadruple the price, and call it magicians rope. MUM'S THE WORD Al Angello

Thanks Al.
I have read the posts mention but there's no 'Big Lots' stores around here that I know of. I'd still like to know of any tricks that can be done with Nylon, Polyester and Polypropylene (Poly) rope. |

Lots of people say you can get the same good deal at Walmart so try there. You live in New Jersey and don't have a Big Lot's near you. Do you live in the pine lands? HAVE FUN Al Angello

The Dennis Loomis Knot Routine would be a good choice for nylon rope. I've mentioned this routine, a favorite of mine, elsewhere. You can use twisted nylon ropein large sizes from Ace Hardware, or drapery cord from a fabric store.

I visited a Big Lots in my area yesterday looking for the aforementioned rope. No clothesline or rope of any kind. Magicians everywhere got it!

Well revlovejoy
Just as I feared I sent a private message to Jaz and magicians everywhere else went out and bought them up. Rev you will have to wait till another truck load of clothes line is delivered to your Big Lots store, and when they do I suggest you buy more than one. HAVE FUN Al Angello PS- Revlovejoy do the women of rural central Pennsylvania use clothes driers, or do they use "clothes lines"?

Thanks guys.
Al. I'm in northern boondocks of NJ near the NY state border. None of my girls know of any Big Lot stores around here and if anyone should it's them. I didn't get a PM from you. Hmmmm. MagicGrandpa. Tricks with non-cotton rope is what I'm curious about. Thanks. |

Jaz,
Try this. The brand is My Helper Monroe Township, NJ 08831 Their catalog # 71001 China # 71001-04502 Bar Code 71555 710001 It is called #7 Clothesline. It comes in 100' hanks and retails for $2.99. (If they give you a better deal please tell us! We use miles of it!) That's the best I can do on one day's notice. For a while it came from Pakistan. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Jaz,
I got a call Thursday (yesterday) about a New Jersey booking and thought about you. Have you tracked the rope down? I thought it was really strange that the address for the rope traced back to New Jersey where you are. You and my wife Lucy need to trade some magic art ideas sometime. Lucy has decorated our Valley Grande house in magic art that mostly she has painted or sculpted. The coat of arms over the front doors is a piece we jokingly refer to as “Bunny Heart Ranch”. Especially some of her paintings are very good. Bob Magic By Sander |

Bob. Thanks for thinking about me.
I have some cotton rope so I haven't really tried tracking any down. I'm still curious about rope tricks with other types of rope since they're becoming so common. I'm not sure what magic art ideas I can exchange. I've done some watercolor and pastel work in the past but my medium of late has been computer graphics. I wish I had more time and space to work with other mediums but I don't. |

It is rather small diameter, but it is cotton and it is for clotheslines. It is onlt 1 penny per foot. That's right, a 50' hank for 50 cents. I ran across it at the corner of an isle near the section of Walmart where they keep ironing boards. Regan

Al,
I didn't measure the rope I found at Walmart, nor did I see a diameter listed, but I would guess it would be about that size. I did see that it had a cotton core. I'm guessing it is very similar. One penny per foot is certainly cheap enough. Regan

I've tried using cotton rope for cut and restored and the friction is just horrible.
There was some other rope I bought that was like a nylon with a more solid core that could easily be pulled out and seemed fantastic. the knots just slipped right off the rope. I should look for that again.

Isn't the Camirand rope, (as recommended by Sanders) made of cotton?
http://www.camirandmagic.com/ac_022w.html I buy it imported over to here in the UK, wouldn't this be OK? Bruce |

It's expensive for a cut and restored rope routine but I think it would be fine.
I use it for Fiber Optics type stuff. frank Posted: Mar 31, 2006 12:18pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I bought some UDAY cotton magician's rope that seems to work ok for the price. It comes in 50-foot hanks and in different colors.
