Here is something I have been woking on recently. See what you think.
The magi spreads the pack of cards out (face down) on the table in a beautiful arc, and tosses the box to the side. He invites the participant to take a deep breath and take any one of the cards before him, one that he feels particularly drawn to. It is a fair choice. The participant looks at the card. The Magi collects up the deck and places it neatly to the side. Taking the card unseen, the Magi picks up the box and places the card cleanly into the box, closes it, rattles it, and hands it to the participant to hold. "Now I want you to close your eyes and take a deep breath. Imagine you are standing at the end of an old misty forest, in front of a mysterious mansion, many years ago. There is a big oak door. Open it, it's heavy, walk into the room, elaborately decorated and furnished. There is a table. On the table is an old pack of cards. Take a seat and run your hands through them. You will find yourself drawn towards one card, the same one that you picked out earlier. Take it out and look at it. It's old, almost tarot like in nature. See the detail on the aged card, the colours, the style. Place it into the box in your hand. Now, as it would be unfair to leave the owners of this house with an incomplete pack, leave them your card it its place. Now hurry, quick before the owners return. Come back to me, come back through the forest, back through the mist, back to this room. Open your eyes." The Magi takes the box from the spectator, opens it and cleanly removes one aged playing card, smaller, and visibly different from the earlier card (but still face down). The box is empty, and seen to be. "Now at that old house you were drawn towards one card, which you brought back here" Gesture for the participant to turn over the card. It is the the King of Hearts. An old, tarot like card. The design is from the 15th Century. The participant gasps, as that was the card they picked out in the house, the one that they felt drawn to. But that was just an imagination, wasn't it...? |

Does anyone have any comments on the presentation of this one?
Some people in the Bizarre section liked it a lot. It was inspired by a effect called Time Machine in Wonder Words Two (i think). I liked the idea of someone bringing back a sovigneer (?) from another time/place/world. I wanted this to have a mental theme rather than be just a clever card switch. Thoughts? Ross |
