Anyone have any ideas to return silvery shiny lustre to some old jumbo coins that have turned all grey?
thanks, |

If you're using the kind of coin I'm envisioning, I don't know of any method that will work. I suggest that you purchase chrome-plated coins.

Spray Paint. Metal or chrome colored..That is what I do with the coins I use in the streets. I don't reccommend it for formal occasions but it will get you a better look.
You could also take them to a shop that chrome plates things. Nickel plating might be cheaper. Joe |

I guess you should have waited for the paint to dry before fooling around with the coins. Also, I would reccommend Krylon. (Don't buy the cheap stuff.) The paint chips but you can paint it again..
You can get Jumbo Coins fairly cheap if you buy them in bulk. Chrome is hard to get to stick to the coins. I don't know why. Nickel plating seems to work best for me. |

Just use metal polish and you'll be fine. Something like "Blue Magic" which is sold at most automotive parts places for cleaning wheels, etc. That'll shine it up pretty well. An old trick for cleaning normal coins is toothpaste. I've used it on silver coins many times and it works a treat. I just went and fetched and old greyish jumbo and tried the toothpaste. It takes the dullness away and gives it about as much shine as it ever had when new.
Blue Magic will take it to the next level. Cost less than $5 for a tube and will last you a long time. Plus, if you use toothpaste, Kennedy will have fresh breath If you use the toothpaste, don't add water. Just smear it all around it and work it in with a rag or your fingers, then rinse it off. Cheap and easy, and no shipping to platers involved!

Backside- old finish
Frontside- Toothpaste and then Blue Magic (toothpaste not needed) The photo really doesn't capture just how shiney it really is. I had to adjust the angle of the photo, since the light was making it so bright, I couldn't get a good shot. http://www.magicpitch.com/images/jumbocoins.jpg

Those are great ideas Magicpitch but they tarnish in my hands in a matter of minutes. I have a very bad reaction to coins that aren't silver (i.e. eisenhowers tarnish like crazy). The cheap jumbo coins that were metioned above I have the same problem with. Silver paint eliminates the chemical reation between the coins and my hands.
Plus I don't have to ship to the chromer. I have one here in town that I send a lot of business to and he helps me out because of the small amount of chrome that I need. Joe |

Ahhh...so you're one of THOSE people Joe? We did some classes and everyone had a set of cups. At the end of the weekend, I was putting all the cups away, and could not believe how some of them had changed and some hadn't. Some guys cups looked like you just took them out of the bag, and some looked like they were handled for years. Never seen so much variance from person to person. Not sure if it's basic body chemistry or diet related or what.

A little rub with a tiny dab of metal was is more than enough to get the coins sparkling like new. A metal wax is nothing but the orangish paste that you get to buy on the roadsides for a very minimal price... It is used to give shine to old metal utensils, spoons, statues, etc...
Hope the suggestion helped. Sherry:) |

Yes. I am one of THOSE PEOPLE. lol. I think it might have to do with my sweaty hands. That is why I used silver for all of my coin magic. Even before I started using morgan silvers I was using silver halves.
I don't know why steel tarnishes so fast. Brass and Copper do the same thing. I just leave my C/S coin in my pocket to give the Copper side an old tarnished look. Maybe its cause Im Italian. (insert your Joke here__________) I jsut like the paint cause its quick and easy and I don't cring when it falls. All I need to do is a little touch up and Im done. I don't recommend this for cooperate shows. But if your working the streeet.....Its cost effective. Simple. Magically yours, Joe Jesse |

Get them chromed. Lasts forever (unless you drop them and they chip).
Ouch.
