Well, as the old joke says, if you want to find out, go to a restaurant and order scrambled eggs and a chicken sandwich. Then wait to see which one arrives first!
Smile
But seriously (and I can't imagine why anyone would want to be), it was the egg.

If you accept the premise that life evolved first in the ocean, then there were egg-laying creatures before there were chickens.

As creatures continued to evolve, eventually the chicken came into being. But there had been eggs for a gazillion years before that.

So . . . .

It's one of those weird thoughts, like trying to grasp the concept of infinity, that somehow life began to evolve in water and one strand of that creation developed into egg laying creatures, but what created the very first egg laying creature???

I'm off for a lie down in a dark room - again!

In nature, living things evolve through changes in their DNA. In an animal like a chicken, DNA from a male sperm cell and a female ovum meet and combine to form a zygote -- the first cell of a new baby chicken. This first cell divides innumerable times to form all of the cells of the complete animal. In any animal, every cell contains exactly the same DNA, and that DNA comes from the zygote.

Chickens evolved from non-chickens through small changes caused by the mixing of male and female DNA or by mutations to the DNA that produced the zygote. These changes and mutations only have an effect at the point where a new zygote is created. That is, two non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote contained the mutation(s) that produced the first true chicken. That one zygote cell divided to produce the first true chicken.

Prior to that first true chicken zygote, there were only non-chickens. The zygote cell is the only place where DNA mutations could produce a new animal, and the zygote cell is housed in the chicken's egg. So, the egg must have come first.

The egg came first, but only after the chicken. Smile Ah, genetic mutations. Without them, this world would be an incredibly boring place! I wonder what genetic mutation caused the first Magician. Smile

an egg is a potential chicken.

A chicken is an actual chicken.

Potentiality comes before Actuality so therefore it must be the Egg Smile

It depends on your beliefs.

Evolution- The Egg for sure.

Creation- The Chicken for sure.

Personally I think the chicken but that's what makes this question so un-answerable.
On the other hand, you have different fingers.

Jax,

An unfertilized egg is still an egg but it is not a potential chicken. So, now, where's your theory.

Don't be fools! All of you, I am deeply disturbed by this.

Grown magicians....shame....

Everyone knows the EGG BAG came first, then the egg then the chicken.

...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

I tried the restaurant approach and ordered an egg and a chicken sandwich... Guess what came first... A glass of water!

Go figure!

You are all wrong!

They both existed at precisely the same time
and yet, only when observed did either one of
them exist and even then the other one did
not...oh wait, no that is the function of

Like so many other questions, it's all perspective and context. I choose alphabetically - therefore the chicken comes first (in English), although the egg would come first in French...
