In your opinion what is a stronger option to OOTW? What is a better version?
Thanks ahead of time. Dick Lucas

Not sure anything is stronger, but I opt for Paul Harris' Galaxy as the ocassional opener. A bit quicker and more to the point, in my opinion. |

Second that. You can do it impromptu with a angle separation (Lennart Green)

I forgot to include: Is the routine available individually or in a book and where?
Posted: Mar 13, 2006 12:43pm ---------------------------------------- Thanks, but how where do I find instructions?

I learned Galaxy from the Art of Astonishment series. There is an index, so you could figure out which volume but just buy all three, trust me on this one.

I also agree that Paul Harris' Galaxy is the best stacked version of the OOTW plot out there.
I heartily disagree, however, with Roger about using OOTW as an opener. Effects like OOTW, color-changing decks, or any other effect where the final condition fairly obviously suggests a stack, are well worth doing a deck switch. It's so much more effective than performing them as openers merely to avoid a switch. OOTW is too long, interactive, and contemplative to make for a very good opener. It's much more effective in the middle of a routine, or as a closer. Besides, I much prefer Lorayne's Impromptu OOTW even to Galaxy. It has several advantages to any of the stacked versions, and no substantial disadvantages. Another effect along these lines is Dai Vernon's Colour Separation, from the Inner Card trilogy. It is kind of like a packet version of OOTW, using just eight cards. I am doing it now as a warm-up effect for the Impromptu OOTW. In my handling of Colour Separation, I put down face up "leader" cards just like in OOTW, so that it resembles OOTW more exactly. I also have it in an issue of Ammar's Magic Journal that was devoted to Paul Harris. I got it on ebay. Harry Lorayne's Impromptu OOTW is in a fine little paperback booklet called My Favorite Card Tricks. It's readily available and cheap. I assume that it is also in his Classic Collection book, which is readily available and NOT cheap. |

I should add that I've performed Harry Lorayne's 'Out of this Universe' on occasion and dabbled with David Regal's 'Out of This Borough' (it's on his Enough With The Tricks Already! DVD)... the original is still the best.
And there's another useful thread: Out of this World for those who know the original

I like using a stripper deck.
You let the spec shuffle the cards, turn the deck face up and have a red, and black card selected(meanwhile showing that the cards are thoroughly mixed). I give it a few more overhand shuffles as I tell them that we will do a test in ESP. Give it the "stripper" cut, and then set the two leader cards accordingly. You can finish it off like galaxy if you like, but you won't have to keep count of the cards, because the stripped edges will let you know where you are. Anyone else do anything similar? Thanks, Matt |

This isn't my favorite, but I think that its work mentioning. Jay Sankey has an effect he calls "Dowsing." Basically its OOTW but shortened and more in the hands (its a decent thing for table hopping). I know it is one of the bonus effects on one of his DVD's (best guess without looking, because my dvds are in america and I'm in Japan) is that it's on his 3 ring circus DVD.
I use the concept for an Ace production routine. Juggler |

I performed dowsing for a while but kind of moved on since the strip-out addition thing just wasn't the way I normally handled cards. I have no illusions that it is novel but the last few years have had me performing an in-the-hands OOTW effect using the same modified principle found in Galaxy.
It all came about from Darwin Ortiz mentioning he did an impromptu OOTW in the hands in Strong Magic. Since Galaxy is my fave OOTW handling, I immediately figured out how to do it in the hands. It is pretty simple, so I KNOW it is not novel or anything but I never read anything talking about it, so I can't cite a source. Anyway, my basic point was that dowsing has such a small scope, I would recommend trying to increase the scope (use more cards or something). Just my opinion. -Carlos

The best version I know is to be found in M Ammar ETMCM vol 7 I guess. A mix between P Curry, A Colombini and M Ammar version> It-s improntu, spetator shuffle the deck and it comes with a prediction.
