What is the general concept of a "cold" reading? I'm guessing that it is the subtle skill of deducting things about people based on outward signs and indicators...
Is this correct? |

There is so much information on this site about this if you search.
Just try a search. Visit http://www.randi.org He has plenty of information about cold reading there if you do a search. Did I mention trying a search! Kevin |

Just a quick mention that recently South Park did a hilarious episode on cold reading where Kenny's spirit is inside Cartman's body and Stan even becomes a cold reader himself competing with John Edwards. There's a wealth of information in there, and many laughs.

I've done some reading on the web about this, but what I am looking for is some direction about discovering information about individuals based on outward appearances, personality quirks and body languages.
I remember years ago reading about a con artist that could make some very specific assumptions about persons based on the above mentioned criteria. I'm not interested in 'contacting' Bubba's third step cousin thrice removed on his 2nd stepmother's side who was dearly departed in the family outhouse when his cheeks froze to the seat... nor am I interested in 'fishing' techniques as mentioned with the cold reading skills. Does anyone know of any material to this effect? If so, what is this technique of using physical traits to ascertain individual information generally considered to be called? |

That's actually described in the manuscript I mentioned above, which gives some excellent statistical and meaningful info based on the person's gender, jewelery, age, looks, etc. It also breaks down personality types and what to look for. Ian Rowlands has another great book on his website which is supposedly better but I haven't ordered it yet.

I agree! Ian Rowland's book on Cold Reading is one of the best ever written.
Not a collection of standard readings. It peels away the shell and explains the process in a manner that's easy to read and understand. Simply great!

Joedy: Based on what you are asking I can highly recommend " Reading People " by Jo-Ellan Dimitrius. She is the world's foremost profiler for high profile legal cases, i.e. O.J. Simpson etc.
Really excellent and easily available at local shops. - Nicodemus

Like in so many other post, nobody seems to answer the question that was asked, funny...
Joedy, over the last months I read a lot of books concerning "cold reading" and in my opinion (for what it is worth) there is no single concept covering what CR actually is. Most authors see CR from a certain point of view which also defines their concept of CR. For some it is a deception technique to simulate psychic powers you do not have, for others it is simply a term for describing readings you give for a total stranger. Most of the books or pamphlets do not see it as a subtle skill of deducting things about people based on outward signs and indicators, since that needs years of experience and practice and is not a 100% sure fire method. So please define what you are looking for, or what you intend to do with CR and you might get the right direction shown.

Thanks for the reply, everyone.
The skill that I am attempting to acquire is the ability to "sense" beforehand, which types of illusions that would be better suited to a spec. Now, some illusions and tricks are clearly not suited for some persons. Using The Web on a pregnant woman, for example, comes to mind. I'm trying to learn from outward signs and observations what the personality type of a spec is. This will allow me to cater a performance to suit their personality style. |

Ah, well perhaps I can help you out a bit here.... I've found (from many years of observation and study) that pregnant women often tend to have a prominent bulge around their midriff. Plus, if they leave to visit the toilet more than twice during your act, they may well be in the late stages, in which case you could do a personal reading for them and "predict" the imminent arrival of a stranger who will change their life for ever. You could also try using NLP to suggest that they will survive the next year with no sleep.

Ooops...
I guess you are on the wrong track somehow. The skill you are looking for is called: experience. If I couls sell it in small bags, I would earn millions Take "The web" for example. I consider it one of the worst effects I have ever bought (and luckily I only bought a few and then invested my money in books): 1. It is just a variation of the old ash trick " 2. While the ash trick is improptu and works wonders in small groups (like in a pub or something like that), the web is not, can never be done more then once and needs stupid props 3. Try to do it on someone with sweaty hands 4. While a pregnant women might laugh about it, someone with arachnophobia will kill you after she regained conciousness 5. You should entertain your audience not scare it etc, etc. I guess you get the point. So here my advice: Look for some of magic books who do not teach tricks but tell you about the major principles of magic theory. Get yourself some books about performance theory (theater, storytelling, selling etc). It is a long way to the top (and sometimes it gets longer and longer and...)

Joedy,
I have not read "Reading People", but I have read "I Know What You Are Thniking" by Lillian Glass. Using the 4 codes of communication; Speech, Facial, Vocal and Body Language, she uncovers what people are really thinking with these clues. Helpful for any performer. I think that may be more of what you are looking for instead of cold reading material. JR |

Ian Rowland's book is great, and add a little more NLP and the reading you will give will knock their socks off.

I came across a very interesting book at the bookstore called The Art of Profiling...Reading People Right the First Time. The book is by Dan Korem.I am only halfway through the book but it has an excellent system for profiling people quite accurately. The book helps you do this by answering just four direct questions in your mind about someone after just meeting them. I have been told this is a text that is also read by law enforcement agencies....
