Hello…
Okay, I have been doing major escapes on PR stunts. Can anyone come up with a cool PR stunt, or can think of an old PR stunt that was performed in the early 1800-1900’s??? David Blain the ice cube, buried alive etc… Things on that order but something that a modern, well-known magician has not really performed. Trying to thinking of something Houdini or old style. Any ideas, guys? Cheers Curtis

How about the old blindfolded drive of the horse-drawn carriage? There is a big flap about these carriages in NYC right now, it could make a nice hook for an editor.

Well, I liked how Nathan Burton did the twist on the Blaine stunt by being in the glass box with all the showgirls 8-D! The blindfolded carriage idea is a good one along the same lines, take a standard idea and twist it. Along the same idea, how about a blindfolded motorcycle drive? As part of the fun, you go between two lines of people without hitting them.
Another much more radical twist on the blindfolded drive in general would be to have a "crash". That is, you go into a planned crash into some building or object, fireworks, explosions, and you come out unscathed. Along the lines of the "failed" escape from the DC Death Saw or Chriss Angel's "failed" escape into the wood chipper (Ah, how the movie Fargo still influences us . |

I liked the one Claude Haggerty did (also many others have done it).
The crate is inspected and then put on a race track with the magician locked inside. A transport is put on the track and a cinderblock on the gas peddal. The transport hits the crate making it fly into little pieces and when you look closely then the magician is driving the transport. |

I perform a Blindfolded Motorcycle Drive now in my show. I use it as a PR stunt every now and then. What about ........ A headline prediction but predict the outcome of a local sports team game. I've used this one also to predict A Devil Rays baseball game (well, not actually done yet but working on it right now).

If you want something like the old-time publicity stunts, you can go with an escape from a milk can full of beer. Houdini was once challenged to do that and he accepted. It happened however that he fainted inside from the alchohol fumes inside the barrel. Nowadays you can make a fake beer in a zillion ways (there is one recipe on how to make fake beer with shampoo). With this you can do a stunt and have a local brewery as a sponsor...

How about Escape form a straightjacket with belly loops while hung below a moving helicopter... if you can afford this.
Or a version of the table of death. But uncovered in a junk yard. Have a broken car hung above you. You're shackled to some type of table. You have 1 minute to escape or they drop the car. Right before they drop you escape and dash forward toward the audience barely missing death. |

Brandon,
The helicopter effect... doing it now. Hehehe I do like the table of death idea. I will file that in the "YES" thoughts.... Cheers, Curtis

I have a couple of ideas...Neither are endurance or escape effects but both are really big and will get huge publicity!
I talked to Franz about this idea. He liked my idea but there are a lot of logistical problems to deal with. This is possible though. Here it is: You jump from an airplane and deploy a parachute. You are clearly seen to be dropping from the sky by helicopters observing. You land on the ground on your mark, the chute collapses over you and goes flat to the ground. Spectators surround the landing spot and all are mesmerized. You have vanished. Another idea I had that Franz said he had already thought of was vanishing a full moon for a live audience. He said it was just too unbelieveable and that no one would or probably could bite in to it. I am not so sure though.

There's always the bunjee jump of death from a bridge during rush hour. That should make the news.
From the really bad old days, a man could be executed by being tied to the front of a cannon and having it fired at close range through his body. Kind of messy, but it could also be a great illusion - a gaping hole opens up in your body when the cannon fires and the smoke pours through it, then the hole gets smaller and smaller and you are healed to make your escape. I'm glad I won't be the one trying it. It could give you a killer headache, like catching a bullet in your teeth.

First, you have to learn to skydive. Then, you have to be able to land dead-center on your target EVERY TIME (accuracy jumping will take a lifetime to perfect). As far as the parachute falling over you, most likely it won't. Today's parachutes are rectagular, and fly forward like an airplane wing, so you won't be coming straight down- you'll sort of "swoop" in. The canopy generally falls to the front or to one side. or in the case of high wind, behind you. You certainly wouldn't want to try this with an old round parachute, as those are far less than accurate and drop you like a ton of bricks. Please understand, though, I'm not trying to kill a good idea (it's a great one). I'm all about being creative and different. I just can't imagine how this one would be pulled off from the skydiving end. If you do figure it out, however, let me know. I'll be there cheering you on! Good luck! Phil |

Hmm, what about having a stunt-man who can hit the target? Just do a switch. When he lands (you) disappear, and reappear???

Talk to Timothy about that. I am pretty sure he did somthing for Kenny vs. Spenny and he made a switch of a guy that looked just like one of them for a contest and then switched back at the end of the contest.
