What would you tell a lady who has been inspired by good magic shows and would like to become a professional magician?
She says she does not mind the challenging learning process and would pay the price of buying good props. Would you take up the challenge to help her? FYI, she knows nothing about magic. |

I'm probably just being mean, but make her master the muscle pass before you show her anything else. If shes willing to put up with the pain it takes to learn it, then you know she's ready.

I have the same problem at the moment, I'm testing the water with a couple of flourishes, like a card spring for example. Just to see if it'll last,

I would tell her the same as I tell any magician starting in magic. Welcome aboard and it would be my pleasure to assist you in any way that I can. How may I be of assistance to you and let us work together to help you enjoy the art of magic.
Keep in mind that we were all just like her at one point in our magical career. I always wished back then that I had someone willing enough to take time to teach and assist me. Kyle

Thanks James. I have taught kids ages 7-17 the art of magic as a co-leader of the Philadelphia SYM club now for over 11+ years. I have enjoyed every minute of it and would never ever think of having them pay me to do it. It is my way to give back to magic what magic gave to me. The kids are fantastic and I think helping anyone get more involved in magic is a very good thing indeed.

I always suggest they first invest in something like Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic, perhaps buy a few DVD's like some of Patrick Page's secret sessions. If they are really interested they will do that and start to learn, once they show me they are learning, I'm more than willing to help them further. Manipulation is something a bit advanced, and I think they need to know their basics first. When they can do a few vanishes with a sponge ball, a few coin vanishes and palms, and can backpalm and do a pressure fan with cards, I generally think it is time to give them a bit of instruction. They have shown their intentions well by then.

What magic interests her? Stage, close up, etc?
What venues? Children, stage, caberet, etc? Time permitting I would accept the challenge. I would have her buy rope, a deck of cards, a plastic cups and balls set and have her obtain some suitable coins. One thing I would do to test her dedication would be to teach a couple of fairly simple tricks and challenge her to come up with a decent presentation and patter. Tricks might include: Cut and Restored Rope. A one coin flurry. Ambitious Card routine. and later Cups and Balls. These should get her used to handling props, give her some though about misdirection and presenting magic. |

Thanks for the contribution, Jaz.
BTW, she is interested to go full time after a 1 year training - and that means Stage, Parlour, Close Up, Children performances, corporate shows, etc. She knows the cost of getting her own props and willing to do so. This lady is dynamic and full of enthusiasm in show biz. And one more thing - she has the full blessing from her family to go into this profession. |

Well, the reality is there is not a single female magician in my country. So in terms of business I see a marketibility there.
I actually told her that it takes time possibly 2-3 years minimum of training, practises and rehearsals. But I am trying to cut it short due to business objectives. Of course she get to use the huge inventory of props I have to cut short the learning curves. To do so she can peform a choreographed performance together with me. And then she can work towards performing on her own. The intention of my post is to get more ideas. And thanks for contributing, Jaz. |
