This may seem stupid, but I've read many times that a certain wand is "perfectly balanced for spinning". Actually, what does this mean? A stick or dowel is "balanced" by definition, I would think.
Are we talking about additional weight added to the ends, such as ferules or metal plugs? Just curious.... sm P.S. Personally, I always found the brass weapon Bill sells and the Ammar aluminum wand well "balanced" for spinning, but assuming the outer sheath is properly centered, there is no balancing to my way of thinking. I've never spun a wooden wand that matched the feel of these. |

As long as it is a homogeneous stick, it's balanced. Thank the laws of physics for that! Some of the weighted wands are especially nice, because they have a lot of inertia. This helps with the wand spins.

One of the best things I found was when my wand broke. I had to use a plastic one it was very light, so I ended up removing an end and filling it with sand. It worked perfectly.

Stevenamills,
Yes, a "balanced wand" refers to a wand with weighted tips that doesn't feel heavy and spins very smoothly and evenly. Just sticking metal ends on it doesn't do it. There are a few makers of wands that make exceptional-feeling wands. The Ammar stick of aluminum is not too heavy and spins well, but the look is not what I am after. The same with a drum stick covered with electrical tape. If those are the look you are after, then by all means... I prefer something a little more elegant, classy, or keeping with the style of my character. |

I've made a few wands in the past few weeks, the latest (which was today) was another drumstick model.
Instead of using tape, I opted to use wood stain. I cut the tip off of the drum stick and cut a few inches from the opposite end, making the wand 13 inches long. It now kinda looks like a Harry Potter wand, minus the contoured handle. It spins like a dream...just gotta wait for the stain to dry. johnny

I've been spinning my $5 wand for years...not even sure what's it's made out of... some kind of poly-ethel-fibre-wand-material with some chrome tips.
If I ever held a "real" wand in my hands, it might actually do real magic! |

I am very interested in making custom, unique wands. I will actually be starting soon. But to make sure they are balanced, the balance should be at the central point between the two end, right? As I make them, I plan to test for balance and to note they are balanced. Are people interested in other materials besides wood and the classic white and black wands? What kind of price range would one pay for non-traditional wands?
Thanks, Brett Bensley |

Good observation. I guess the Harry Potter-type wands are unbalanced because they have one end as a handle and one as the business end of the wand. Some of them still spin perfectly well, though maybe not as prettily as a traditional wand.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

Thank you all for the great response and information. I am very glad I decided to get back into magic because this is the most helpful, friendly, sharing bunch of people I know. The true magic is in each one's heart! If that only shows in your performance, there will be nothing but true magic!

I can't seem to get into the cups and balls museum site. All requests for access keep getting bounced back as undeliverable.
Thanks. I will look elsewhere on the internet, especially antique magic apparatus. Thanks. Brett Bensley |

I've been using a plexi-glass wand with my sherwood cups so as not to do damage to the cups. seems like a good idea becuase the wand looks like crystal (I guess). This wand also spins like a dream.

I recall seeing black drumsticks. They might work well as basic wand material.
