A new benefit to belonging to the International Brotherhood of Magicians is access to a free web site builder.
My new site has only 5 pages, but is great for the price. Please give me feedback after checking out.... http://www.magician.org/member/doctoroflaughology/nigel You and your time are appreciated by, Harris

Nice site! So, does the IBM host the site for you as well as helping you design it? If so, is there any additional cost above and beyond your membership? Just curious.

There is no cost for the domain name, or the host.
There are templates and I just uploaded photos and text. The site generator did the rest. Harris Deutsch

Nice site and good job. Another perk to joining up. I just might have to get an application. Sounds like they are just trying to move into the future like everyone else. Sounds like a winner.

I have set one up for the Treasure Valley Magic Club. The only down side is that each member only gets one web site. I gave mine up for the club, but I have a link to my home page once you get to the club site.
This is really cool people. All it takes is being a current I.B.M. member, and about one hour in front of your computer. You build the whole thing pretty much point and click, the page is automatically built for you. The is no cost to put a page up, and there is no annual cost to keep it up. You are only throwing away good publicity if you fail to take advantage of I.B.M.'s free offer. If you are a member then you can build your site by going to: http://www.magician.org/member/ Kipp Sherry |

If you haven't done it yet you need to!! I just got a call from a lady in my city that needs a magician for a cub scout activity and she went to the IBM site and found me through the free web site. I will be doing a show for her cub scouts next week.

Harris,
Thank you! I just read about this benefit in the latest issue of TLR. I was very intrigued but simply haven't had the time to research it. I appreciate you putting up your site link. What a great benefit, eh? IBM does a terrific job with perks such as this. I'm really proud to be a member. |

You can link to your Ring's website, the Magic Café, and your personal website also. It is also possible to insert extra pictures instead of text, as in:
http://www.magician.org/member/drwilson/banners I agree that the URL is something of a downside, but if you use these pages to point to your own site, you might well increase your visibility to search engines. Unfortunately, because these pages are generated by an authoring program, you don't have access to the header, which limits the tricks that you can use to climb in the search engine rankings. The bottom line is that you should have your own site, but it's hard to beat these free pages. Yours, Paul |

Harris,
Nice job on the website. If I may make a couple of suggestions: I would prefer to see your best "publicity" shot on the home page. That is, you and your main puppet or figure. If I am a potential client, I want to get a feel for the person I am hiring and good photo goes a long way in establishing how people will feel about you based on your webpage. Punch up your bullet points with some type of graphic, smileys would be one unimaginative example. It helps to move the eye down the page.

Harris, thanks for posting the info on the IBM free website. I receive Genii, Magic, Mum, and of course The Linking Ring (from the IBM) mags. The Linking Ring has to be the worst of these. I usually just breeze through it. I'm going to have to start paying closer attention to it as I'm sure the free website offer was in there. This is a great deal.
I just completed my site at the IBM page in a little over an hour. Its still a work in progress...I'm sure there will be many changes. Check it out. http://www.magician.org/member/richieb I was in the process of researching the creation of my own site...which I'm continuing to do. The only downside of the IBM free site, that someone mentioned above is the web address...but if you don't have a site, this is a great alternative. Rich B. |

This is a good topic. (we were unaware of the IBM website service when we began our site, but yes We agree it is imperative for performers and Clubs to have their own links. Nice work!) Some thoughts:
One of the things that helped our site get hits from our target crowd (Everyone interested in magic!) is the simple "GO TO" link we established to "forward" people directly to the Homepage. In this case: HawaiiMagicClub.com It is EZ for members to recall and pass on to friends, clients and potential members. Just this past week I've sent 3 people with inquiries to it with questions like: "where can I see Showroom acts Locally?"...HawaiiMagicClub.com "Where can I find a magic shop?" ...........HawaiiMagicClub.com "When do you meet?"........................HawaiiMagicClub.com "Where can I get info on the Lecture?".....HawaiiMagicClub.com For us, the goal is to make the site "Info Central" for magic in the State of Hawaii. The trick for EVERYONE to use it EASILY is a SIMPLE and MEMORABLE "Go-To" name. Our webmaster Bryan is also working hard to keep it Simple to navigate and user friendly, not so complex and overwhelming it will frustrate new users. The pics and graphics load quickly (people are understandably impatient these days), and we are collecting images now to give it a "friendly sense of place" (You are hit with "ALOHA!" and a view of Diamond Head on first loading, so you KNOW you are in Hawaii!) One of the big plusses discovered so far (a great idea for any club) is the "Magic In Hawaii!(Your State)" page that tells you exactly where to go for magic in town, from Showroom acts to Bar&Lounge performers, Magic Shops, and Upcoming Lectures and Events. (The hard part is keeping this an INFORMATIVE link-off page, and not read like advertising copy for any show. Once a viewer jumps to their page of course, they can advertise all they want!) We appreciate your thoughts and feedback, please stop by on your next Island Vacation! Magical Aloha; -Mike Ching Pres.IBM Hawaii MikeC1800@aol.com |

Hey Sal,
I like your new website, but I have one suggestion: I think it would be easier on the eyes if you centered the main bulk of the text instead of having it on the right side, that way when you scroll down there isn't just bank space on the left half of the screen. -Maestro |

The new free websites provided by IBM to its members is a great value! It is very easy to construct, even without any computer knowledge! I have used mine as our Raleigh IBM Ring website to deliver current magic news and information to our members. The IBM is going to use the internet much more in delivering value and options to its members!

I decided to make one up because the provider of the site I had changed many things and it through my page all out of wack. You can check it out here - http://www.magician.org/member/michaeljmagic Best
