Hello to all of the Café members!
I was asked by a little girl if I could do a birthday party for her...now the thing is I have never done a kids show! I have a lot of time to practice and such, so I just thought you guys would know the best on what to buy, etc. So, please list some great books you think that are a must have for getting into this genre of magic... I personally think books would be a great start! Then, I was wondering what some of your favourite props are? Thanks so much everyone, I know I can get some A+ advice from everyone here! Magically, Tanner Jade P.S. I would be happy to buy some second hand items if anyone has any as well Thanks All! |

Go heavy on the peanut butter and fire.
Other than that read some of the threads here. If you have some specific questions lay 'em on us and give the age of the kids, that helps. Steve V |

Well, it is like a 6-7 year old party... I would like to get into all ages though! Thanks, Tanner Jade |

I assume the show is freebie and the little girl is a friend or family friend.
Therefore, I would consider making it a very short show (about 20 minutes) of about three tricks. One to warm them up (any "look behind you"), one to amaze the (any strong rope routine) and then fun production that gets them all yellling (a candy production for example.) |

I like you Tanner Jade. If you like you can email me at steve.vaughn@analog.com and I'll send you the scan of my script for a kids show for that age group. It will give you an idea of the components of a routine and the pacing etc..

What types of tricks do you currently have and perform? How would you describe your performing personality? This will help us give you some meaningful suggestions on tricks.

Hello MagicMan845,
I do not have anything prop wise for Kids Shows, except for some rope and such... I love to be funny, and make my spectators laugh...so I am a light mooded magician I guess. Thanks so much for the help everyone, it is very much appreciated! |

What is your budget to develop a kids show? The reason I'm asking this is that you're basically starting from scratch. There's nothing wrong with that - after all everyone needs to start from some place.
It's just that kids shows tend to rely heavily on visual props; and props can get expensive. As you get more and more experience in performing for kids, you will find that you can run a very entertaining show with relatively few effects. This is because you gradually add more and more entertainment value to your show that does not rely on the tricks. In the beginning though, many young magicians find their kidshow to be very trick heavy. This can place a strain on the budget, especially if you are buying new. Some very popular kidshow effects may include: Dove Pan ($45.00) Strat-O-Sphere ($85.00) Axtell Drawing Board ($145.00) Die Box ($100.00) Milk Pitcher ($45.00) PB & J ($45.00) Now, I'm not trying to suggest that you need any of these effects to make a good show. I'm just using these examples to illustrate how expensive the props can get if you don't own anything that can otherwise be used in the show. Since this is a free show where you can gain a lot of performing experience, I wouldn't recommend mortgaging the house just yet. Instead, focus on an enteraining yet economical show. Try effects such as these: Sponge Balls ($6.00) Professor's Nightmare ($10.00) Fun Magic Coloring Book ($10.00) Silk Vanish ($10.00) Chameleon Silks ($15.00) For about $50.00 you can piece together a very nice little show, with versatile effects that can be used to entertain various age groups. With a decent warm-up, a show like this could easily run about 30 minutes. If you find that you like entertaining kids, you can then add on to the props over time, making your show better and better. At that time, you should also pick up a copy of David Kaye's book, "Seriously Silly". It will give you guidance and advice on how to make your show stronger. The only reason I don't suggest you get the book right away is that you need at least SOME performing experience against which to relate the advice. Hope that helps. Kent

Do keep in mind you can do an entire kids show w/out buying any of the packaged routines. They are nice but not at all required. Everyone suggesting Seriously Silly is dead on, great info on routining. You can do a great show with:
some rope, an envelope, silks, a TT, make your own 20th Century Silks using bandanas etc, some rings (the name has something to do with horses but I know absolutely nothing about horses so I don't remember that thing that goes on their heads), some plastic cups, some napkins, and to get hard core magical some sponge balls. Wow, I kindly thank you Kent and Steve...without everyones help here, I would be no where! Thank You from my heart!
I will definitely look into these effects, as well as the book... It seems to be a little conflicting between buying the book right away, or waiting until I get a few shows under my belt first... Once again, thanks for all the help everyone! Magically, Tanner Jade |

I would suggest getting the Seriously Silly book (as well as many others) right away. I see no reason why you should fumble your way blindly through a few shows before you read the book. Your first few shows will not be your best, with or without the book. But you gotta get through them and get the experience. I think it's great that you are doing the show for free, by the way. The last thing you want to do, is to charge someone their hard-earned money, just to watch you make some mistakes and learn the ropes. And yes, you WILL make some mostakes. It's inevitable in a first show - especially a first KID'S show. Just remember that you learn the most from a bad show. I also recommend writing a thorough journal entry after each of your first few shows. They really helped me figure out why some gags and tricks fell flat, and why some others worked.
Good luck, I hope it goes well for ya.
