Hi
does any one know where you can get the book test effect: where the page "chosen" is found in an "impossble location" ripped out of the book the book is then re-opened to show the page is missing? I beleive it may be titled "the wizard book test"? many thanks for your time and help in advance! matt |

It's Docc Hilford's "Wizard's Manual" and a google search will locate a load of places that sell it. I agree, it's a great item. It was performed on me once and it left me speechless, along with making me wonder how the heck the guy had done it for about 6 months.

It reads like a nice variation of the Phoenix Book Test.

As far as I am aware, the genealogy begins with Annemann's "Whim of Tituba" from Annemann's Practical Mental Effects (which means it must have appeared earlier in The Jinx); if this is based on or inspired by earlier work, Annemann does not mention it. The plotline was picked up in the 1970s by Arthur Emerson in "The Pegasus Page", published in "A Third Evening at the Magic Circle." Emerson credits Herbert Milton, Robert Harbin, and Ned Rutledge for ideas. Ted Lesley also has "The Sough of Horses Wings" in Paramiracles, which is obviously a nod to the Emerson effect.
There are more than a few variations on the effect (including one I nearly always use as my closer). Rory

Rory:
Thank you, Phoenix was derived from Pegasus Page. In Phoenix, the page is burned from the book (rather than having been torn), and the singed page is recovered from another location, locked box, envelope,... after the spectator acknowledges that her page is missing. Tony |

Spent some time with Doc this weekend and he's a really cool guy. He certainly gave me food for thought, not saying I agree with everything he says but he certainly got me thinking.

I would love to sit through his presentation of At the Mountains of Madness once to see how he performs it.... love that routine! I've never run it as it was outlined - but cannabilzed bits and pieces for other routines.... I never felt I could do the shoggoth bit at the end right!!! (Hence why I went for a Hound of Tindalos instead (woof!))

can I adapt the wizard's manual to other books? |

Sweeney, you certainly can once you understand the method. Wouldn't be too difficult.

You can have the missing page appear in a Himber W****t or, my preference, a Lesley Tele***t Envelope.

I recently bought The Wizard's Manual".
I like the effects methodology but to be honest, I'm a bit "underwhelmed" by the nature of the "work" done on it. It seems a bit....visually obvious. I know the handling is key but the suggestion of handing to the spectator seems a bit foolhardy. I also found the matter of "getting to the right place" a bit hit and miss. Finally the "work" in terms of the spectators chosen "destination" looks very much like 'what it is' and could use a bit of visual lining up. Maybe I got a copy that slipped through the net but it has inspired me to make up my own and maybe I can tweak it a bit better.

I can tell you that this routine KILLS!!! Don't underestimate it, I'd tell you give it a try but as with anything -- you have to believe in it to sell it!

Agreed!
The directness of the method and effect has made this my favorite booktest. It really answers the "why use a book" question to read minds ...So you can show that you have influenced their thoughts. I can assure you the effect on your audience will be dramatic. I love it. Sean |

Tom,
I have seen significant differences in quality between different books. I had to return one that wasn't constructed properly. Docc was a gentleman as always and not only did I get a new book that worked perfectly but it was a far better book than the first one. It is somewhat oversize, kind of academic in appearance and works just like it is supposed to. This is too good of an effect to settle for an inferior product. I suspect if you let Docc know, he'll exchange your copy for one without any glitches post haste. I'm not sure this covers all of your concerns but as far as quality of production you should get what you paid for. Regarding other worries that you were correctly vague about on an open thread, I'm not so sure what you are referring to. I will say that with the new book, I pretty much follow SOP and it never fails to leave a very strong impression. Bill |

Thanks guys.
It is difficult explaining concerns without just blurting them out. Its even more difficult to know what is "normal" and what is (perhaps) less than the makers ideal gaffing as I have nothing to compare it to. I had tried to contact Docc about one of his effects being ripped off on Ebay (that's no breaking news I know) but never heard from him so I don't hold out much hope on that front. I guess I'll try gaffing my own and if I can't manage any better I try and get onto Docc. Does anyone have an email address that they KNOW is current? If you do could you PM me so I can drop him a line? Thanks again.

Ted Lesley's Cabaret Mindreading DVD contains the effect where a chosen page is found in an envelope that another spectator is holding. Then when someone flips through the pages in the book, they find that the page is ripped out. The DVD is great because you get a whole bunch of effects along with the one Matt was talking about.
