Hey there,
I have two doves, one may be about 6 months old and the other 4-5 months. I bet they are too young to mate? Anyways, lately I have seen the younger one do a disply where its neck gets a lot bigger or fatter and then he bobs up and down - like those little birdies with the water in the base. Is this the male? Also today was the first time I saw it "jump" on top of the other one after the call/display. What exactly is this display for? Mating or just normal day-to-day life? Thanks. |

Baluk, there is never a guarantee as far as gender is concerned until they actually lay an egg. From the sounds of things though, it is extremely possible that your displaying bird is a male. That's what they do when they are trying to mate. I would say it is probably more than 6 months old. Jumping on the back of the other dove is what they do when they mate. At such a young age, the eggs that get layed will probably be infertile but you never know. Keep an eye out for eggs. At that young age, they are just getting used to feeding themselves and trying to take care of babies would not be a good idea for them. If you don't want babies, just throw the eggs away.

it takes a lot of dove eggs to even make a snack.
