What about the magic clubs who purchase ONE video for the clubs libary knowing that most (not all) of the members will make a copy. And we wonder why the cost of magic is so HIGH. It was always high because of the number of items you could sell and make. But now we have to pay (and I know I am going to hear from a few), 10 dollars for a sheet of copy paper, well least now computer copys are better. I know it's the Idea your buying. But some times WHO'S.

Greetings, I should have been a bit more specific. I do not mean making a back-up copy (or working copy) of an item that you have purchased to protect your investment. I am referring to someone making a personal copy of something that they borrow from a friend. I apologize for the lack of clarity. Keep the change, Rick Maue |

I know for a fact that there are many UK suppliers / lecturers who "Rip-Off" ideas with nothing more than a handling change and sometimes no change at all and then sell the product on as their own.
Anyone going to Blackpool convention this year should look on the dealers stands and make an honest judgement as to what they see. I guess because the vast majority of magicians are not particularly "well read" they take for granted anything they see to be "un-pirated." |

We had a Magic Club here but it folded. One reason wa sat least one guy was copying everything I, and probably others, showed.
I was told he was making multiples for an interstate dealer and selling some himself. Wehn I heard he was making rip-off D'lites by soldering directly onto the battery, I kept hoping but he is still around.

At a major convention a few years back, Aldo Colombini was giving a lecture.
Afterwards, as I was waiting to have a chat with Aldo, I overheard two conventioneers talking. One had just bought Aldo's notes. He told the other one that they could take them back home, have them photocopied and sell them to club members and "make a few bucks" for the club. They simply didn't get it! Even though their motives may have been good, it was still -- purely and simply -- theft of Aldo's ideas. While those who steal and make unauthorized copies for profit are bad, equally bad are those who -- perhaps innocently and because they don't know -- make unauthorized copies for even the best of motives. There is simply nothing that can be done in a case like that because, in the majority of cases, the originator doesn't know that it is happening. I've had both types of theft happen to me and the only thing is to go "back to the drawing board" and come up with something new. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Honestly, this is one of the reasons I got out of the Magic "Retail" game. I got sick of these little whining twits always wanting to pay next to nothing for any video tapes that came out. "Oh, I'm just a poor ________ (fill in the blank with your favorite line) and can't afford these terribly high prices these bloodsucking dealers and performers want for their intellectual material".
What a shame. I remember when videos of this nature cost $60.00 each and the production value was barely viewable and that was back when $60.00 was like $100.00 today. Now we have the internet and the new Gen-X'ers who believe that everything should just be handed to them "FREE OF CHARGE" without any work on their part what so ever. It's this attitude that has given a life to the piraters and black marketers, and it is this attitude in general that will continue to give them sustenance for the rest of our lives. Why? Because I have NO faith in the human factor of the magic community to police itself. The answer? It's a harsh one. The true intellectual giants in our field should go back underground. Sharing, at their disgression, with only their most trusted circles of influence. You want me off this soap box you better bring a lunch, because it'll be an all day affair. I produce non-magic books for my seminars. It is estimated that for each one I have produced, two other copies are made.
I even had people I know never came to my seminar call me up on the phone and ask me questions about things they didn't understand in the book. The very first seminar I did, a test seminar consisting of 16 firefighters in another City, when I go back to my department, there were 35 copies of that book floating in one particular circle. My revenge was sweet...Individuals came to me because they knew my knowledge level, but did not know I was the autjor of that book, and asked me how I would resolve the example problems... Well, none of the 35 who copied my book got promoted...Oh sweet revenge! Unlike magic, eventually many of these people who copied my book came to my seminar at one point in time. Gen-Xers, Oh so true...I'm one of those guys who buys all my computer software and games... Now that's a field copying is easy and done daily by many, many, people. For every solution, there are dozens of hackers who find a way around it!

HI,
there was a post on the "make a magic deal" page advertising a CD rom which he claimed he had compiled. The post appeared then dissappeared, re-appeared and I think it's been removed again. Anyway I asked him where the vid clips came from and got this reply to my private email address. "Hi there, This is a reply to the question you posted on MagicCafe forum. Ok just to tell you in a little more detail, it took me nearly 2 weeks of capturing video files, converting them all to RealMedia files so that the 6 hours plus would fit on a CD and then putting it all together with an easy to use navigation system using Dreamweaver, I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. The performers are proffesionals like Micheal Ammer, Daryl, David Acer. They are very professionally done. I won't put up lousy useless stuff for sale. I know there are A LOT of rubbish sales out there trying to con you to spend $14 or more on just one trick. It is a very good way to earn lotsa cash. The reason why I compiled these tricks are to put them all into a CD is to share them with all magic enthusiasts. I think these clips featured are great as the videos are VERY clear and from different camera angles. You often get grummy and dark clips from the net but this is different. It is as good as watching TV at home as they all have perfect lighting and resolution. First there is a video showing the magician performing in front of a live audience(learn the patter, timing, postures, anything from there) and there will be another video of the magician backstage showing you the trick step by step. You can watch it over and over and over again as many times it takes for you to perfect it. Please reply if you want the purchase. I accept paypal or money order. I can send it over within two weeks of recieving the payment. Thanks~! -Jason" (meower) Now I could be wrong but it certianly seems like this guy has just copied the clips from comersial video footage. which is wrong! Please if this post reapears on the magic deal page do not buy this CD without extensive research into the origins of the source material phillip |

Yes, that may be the answer--but what a loss for magic and those of us who DO respect the giants on whose shoulders we stand!
I've said this before, but it bears repeating: I can't do anything about what others may or may not buy or steal. All I can do is make sure that *I* have integrity, and that I police myself. I can speak out, but I can't stop people from copying or stealing. In the case of the items that I put out (my lecture notes, booklets etc), I'm aware that it would be very easy for folks to make copies. So, I try to offer the best product I can at a very reasonable price, such that it will cost someone almost as much to make a copy. I also try to include something extra (gaffed cards, "bonus" items, etc) that will make it worthwhile to buy from ME, as you wouldn't be getting it with a copy. And, in the case of the creations of others, I always make a point of buying the original item from the original creator (or those to whom he has granted manufacturing rights) even if it means it's going to cost me a little more. I can only speak out and make sure that I practice what I preach. That's all any of us can do. As long as I do that, I'll have a clear conscience and know that the "names" can't blame me if they end up having to go back underground.

I purchased two manuscripts by the same magician on ebay, but when I received them they appeared to me to be copies. I went back on ebay and found that the seller, a retailer, had many copies of both manuscripts for sale all the time. These weren't rare items, but they were far to obscure for a dealer to have multiple copies so I emailed the magician who confirmed my suspicions. The remaining manuscripts were all off of ebay within the hour and I emailed the dealer that I would no longer do business with him and I haven't.
Might not seem like much, but we do what we can. |

Now would there be anything wrong with disclosing this dealers name in this forum? It's just one persons opinion of another person. Would Steve and Company be liable for this? If so then perhaps we could post these names in a private emailing.
I don't like that we can openly praise or bash legitimate magic craft in the Good, Bad, and Garbage but we apparently feel we have to tiptoe around those who would destroy our craft through criminal acts. We don't have to make any accusations. Just state that we do or don't like a particular dealer. Steve, your thoughts boss?

A very important issue in magic, to say the least. I'll just touch upon a couple items here if I may.
Regarding the member who was attempting to sell an obvious bootlegged cd rom, he was permanently banned from the Cafe. I will not allow such a thing here. 'nuff said. As far as opinions on magic dealers go, there is a topic in The good, the bad, and the garbage currently in progress. It is there you can relay experiences regarding customer service and such. However, to openly point fingers at dealers who are suspect of piracy is risky at best, and very subjective and controversial to say the least. While I agree this issue needs to be addressed, I am not prepared nor am I willing to use the Cafe as a tool which would no doubt turn into a witch hunt on this matter. This is a subject which ultimately must be left to those in the legal department as it were. It is there that fact versus rumor and conjecture are seperated by hopefully impartial entities. But, I do not have a problem (nor is it my business) with folks sharing thoughts or opinions about dealers through private correspondence.

On the surface, that seems like a good idea, but I don't think it would stop piracy anymore than outlawing drugs stops druggies from obtaining them. If you read historic accounts of the various magicians, you'll see that piracy was a problem at the turn of the century just as it is today. They just didn't have Xerox machines and VCRs. Jim |
