I just received Ralph the Great's Necklace Quest yesterday, and am very pleased with the quality of the product, including the packaging itself.
While doing a search for ideas on how others use this effect, I came up with literally nothing (even using Google). The only real reference I found to it was the Kidabra Halloween dvd, on which Ralph performs this effect (so I ordered the dvd to see what it actually looks like in action). I would like to start using this, but am unsure of a few things. For those who have it, perhaps you can answer a few questions. PM me if you like. 1. Do you dress the child as a princess? 2. Besides the magician and the princess, do you have other characters involved? 3. Do the characters move around, as if acting out the drama, or pretty much stay in one spot where the trick is taking place? 4. When the witch does something bad with the necklace, where do the beads go? I'm sure all these questions will be answered when I receive the Kidabra dvd, but if anyone would like to share a few tips on how they use this, I would enjoy using it sooner than later. Brian |

Hi Brian:
I was under the impression that "Necklace Quest" was done to a prerecorded CD that played - similar to the Vanishing Bandana where your actions match what the narrator is saying. I think I may have misunderstood. Can you give a brief synopsis of the routine? Thanks. Ron |

You're right it is. The only instructions on the scripted sheet that came with it says that all we have to do is follow along with the instructions on the CD. But I'm afraid I'm a little dense, and wonder if it's just the birthday child standing up front with the magician as the prince/princess or if there are others involved in the routine (there are other characters on the CD). Should certain parts of the CD routine be acted out in some comical way, or does the princess and magician just listen until "their" part is to be done?
I was going to do the routine today, but it just seemed to be lacking something. I'm sure that the thing that is lacking is just my imagination to make this routine more fun, but I didn't feel I would be doing it justice until I had more insight as to how others feel it should be performed. Brian |

He performs it on the Halloween DVD from Kidabra.
He does not dress up the young lady that was the volunteer. She did kinda act out a couple parts, probably from little cues from Ralph. The performance of this sold me on it. |

Brian,
if you have the DVD then you will see the handling of this exactly...I've watched the Kidabra Halloween DVD and then ordered the effect from Ralph...the handling isn't difficult but it's important that you not make any mistakes with handling otherwise you won't be able to catch up to the story as narrated on the cd...to answer your questions as I understand them at this point in my rehearsing... 1. you could dress up the princess but you don't have the time... in the performance with Ralph the Great he doesn't do this for the Kidabra audience...not sure if this is usual...would presume that it is or? 2. the only other character is the "doorman" which answers the door...this is done by the magician/you 3. some moving around but not a whole lot...I would encourage you to act it out yourself and see what pantomine you come with...this basically what it is...a pantomine that you act out...see what you come up with and then compare it with the Kidabra DVD when you get it and see what works for you 4. haven't had the time to work out the handling yet...I think what happens is that the witch snatches the necklace...unties the half knot and removes the beads and gives them to the princess...can't remember In the meantime I would make a back up copy and then listen to it over and over again as you act out the routine...this is the real magic of the effect and what makes the routine...the only "magic" is the changebag and that doesn't exactly take much skill...work on selling the routine and coordinating the doorbell sounds, sawing the necklace, shutting off the alarm, the big kiss, and so on...give me a pm if you'd like more great routine that should play really really well smartini |

Thanks for the suggestions. I did order the Kidabra dvd, and am looking forward to seeing how Ralph does it.
The question regarding the witch cutting the necklace with the hacksaw is in regards to what happens to the beads. The cd says she scattered the beads throughout the forest, so I was just wondering if the magician just lets them fall into his prop case (that's probably what I would do). Regarding the characters, there's the princess, the prince, the witch, the doorman, and the magician. It sounds like it would be a fun pantomime if each character could actually be represented by a person. Don't think it's practical, though. Just the princess and the magician sounds much more workable. Brian |

Brian,
you're quite correct about the time factor...on the DVD Ralph does everything but the princess and it plays quite well...as for the beads being scattered I recall this being handled as...the act of the beads being scattered is pantomined and then the princess is given the beads or its put in the "royal bag" until they get taken out later and then changed smartini |

I do not have the Halloween DVD. I have experineced the same frustration. Ralph's directions only say..."Follow along and it will be evident where your actions are." That's the only performance advice you get. Sure I can come up with my own actions to follow the CD, but I do not think Ralph's movements are evident as suggested. I fear I'm missing something brilliant.
I guess I too will have to purchase the Halloween DVD to confirm I'm not missing anything. KA-CHING! DeWayne |

Guys... while Ralph the Greats routine is wonderful so too will be yours...have fun and simply act out the parts that you can...the royal bag, the worlds greatest magician are some parts that you can repeat to beautfiul comedy...think about repeating the same goofy/dramatic action...other than that you have tons of events that happen like driving...so you pretend to drive a car, ringing a doorbell...so you ring a doorbell, receiving a kiss then a smack in the side of the head...again all pantomine that we all can do
I understand the need for context...I like and often need that as well...trust me when I say that you just have to act it out and you don't want to look like someone impersonating Ralph the Great...act it out the way you think you should and you'll find that the actions and movements will come naturally as you start to play with it...enjoy! Smartini ps. easy for me to say as I've seen the Halloween Kidabra DVD...that's why I bought the routine |

I have a white and black mustache and change them during the "quest" routine.
But like they say, you have to see RTG perform it on the Kidabra Haloween DVD. It will give some good ideas. Tip: Before I start show I clue in the person I'm going to use for the NQ routine and tell them to listen to the recording and act along with it. Sometimes the kid is so freaked out that they are up there in front of everybody they just stand there like they are in a trance. But other times they act along with the CD and all is good. The routine is a "winner". And makes YOU look great!

Sometime I do 3 or 4 shows in a day.
OK, I said sometimes....not all the time. As you know, resetting the beads is a pain and time consuming when your in a hurry. I looked in JoAnns and Michaels for similiar beads but did not find any. Anyone know where I can find similiar beads for multiple sets. PM me please. Thx.!

Like the other stated:
Once you see RTG perform it on the Kidabra DVD, your will WANT the "Necklace Quest". You will not be able to wait till it arrives in the mail. But please don't tell anybody because I don't want anyone else but me in my area doing it! Have FUN!

I too felt Ralph should've included a DVD with the Necklace Quest performance on it. I ordered mine quite awhile back after viewing the Halloween DVD, but if consumers don't have a visual on this, I can see them getting lost for performance ideas.
There's lots of comedy bits that I've added or do differently than Ralph, but it was nice to watch someone lay down the basic foundation first. Rick

If nothing else, viewing the Halloween DVD prior to performance gave me the confidence that I was doing it correctly. It also allowed me to get a big picture of the effect.
I performed it at my last three birthday parties (2 boys, 1 girl), and it went over very well. Even the adults get into the routine when everyone calls out the magician's name. Brian |

Hi,
I know this post isn't recent but I'll ask anyway, where did you buy this? I can't find it. |

As you observed, the original thread was started 10-1/2 years ago.
It was probably once for sale under the products section of Ralph the Great's website, but is no longer there (long ago sold out). As to the Halloween DVD they are referring to (with the performance footage), it is still available here: http://www.kidabra.org/kidabra-dvds - Donald P.S. There are other Necklace tricks out there, but I don't know if they are the same props / routine. Were you just looking for a Necklace magic trick?

Necklace quest is available from Tim Sonefelt at Wonder Imagery with or without the Royal Bag. Great routine and wonderful reaction.....if you get the right "actress".
