I have worked in Dubai for many years with my show and have an agent there that books me. Dubai is becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world with many TOP events being held there and has been doing so for many years. They have some amazing new projects being built right now that are truly breathtaking. The money that is available for these projects is amazing and I have no doubt it will be up and running soon.

Seriously...Isn't this the area that Michael Jackson is hanging out in? He actually does own an amusement park.
This place has EVERYTHING...or will have. So this is why my gas is $2.57 today. LOL

It's rumored that this is an effort by U A EMIRATES in preparation for future shortage of natural resources which their economy has relied upon heavily.
On the TRAVEL Channel I recently watched, for the third time, the construction of one of the most ambitious architectural endeavors - JUMEIRAH! Built on it's own man-made Island and acknowledged as the Best Hotel In The World. http://www.jumeirah.com/special_offers_packages/ Burj Al Arab, 7 Stars Jumeirah Beach Road, , Dubai, U A EMIRATES Burj Al Arab Hotel Lounge Under Water Restaurant Ballroom Meeting Room Spa Reception Indoor Pool Heliport. At night, it offers an unforgettable sight, surrounded by choreographed colour sculptures of water and fire. This all-suite hotel reflects the finest that the world has to offer. *Institutional Investor Magazine With your white chauffeur driven Rolls Royce, discreet in-suite check in, private reception desk on every floor and a brigade of highly trained butlers who provide around-the-clock attention, you can be assured of a highly personalised service throughout your stay. I'd love to go and see upclose and film their 'Dancing Waters' in the reception area.
These aern't average by any means. Let's see if I can explain this. The waters are propelled from a long and escalating body of water. The streams of water jet from the main body and land at a distance WITHOUT SPLASHING! As soon as that stream ends, another jumps from the same position and it basically walks it's way uphill. I hope I haven't confused anyone but as the kids like to say, it makes me go "SHWEEEEEEET"! I know, some of the strangest things entertain me the most. They also brought in a US company to design a pump system that allows for the combination of fire and water in the fountain at the hotel entrance. Pump systems that exist nowhere else in the world. And the lighting system that shoots colored lights up and down the sail shaped building are better than a fireworks display. This place is nuts! Oh and for those of you demanding only the best in transport, here's a press release from Jumeirah: "In priding itself on being a leader in the industry, Burj Al Arab was the first in the world to place an order for the brilliant ‘Arctic White’ coloured Rolls-Royce Phantom. The second Phantom is scheduled to be delivered by the end of this year, taking the Burj Al Arab Rolls-Royce limousine fleet to a total of twelve." |

So have any of you visited, seen, or know anyone who's been to the Burj Al Arab Hotel?
It's plans for nearby live entertainment are unbelievable! It will be sparing no expense to acquire talents from around the world. Now I'm not poking fun at ya Ross but I found this really funny! Quote:

The problem with theme parks is they don't want to pay you much money so for those whith a second job it's great but for full time pros it's not enough

I have been to JUMEIRAH with my agent for a press conference to promote a show I was doing there.
My entire act is performed in character as Charlie Chaplin, which works well in foreign countries because it's a silent act. Even getting over the bridge to the hotel is an experience, but the funniest thing happened because once we arrived, the doorman opened my door (I was in character as Chaplin) and looked at me and said, "Mr. Chaplin, it's an honor to meet your sir, I've watched ALL your movies". I just nodded and shook his hand and walk on, but my agent was on the floor laughing. I discovered that Chaplin films are very popular there and when I flew to another gig with Emirates Airline they had an entire channel on the movie program on the plane dedicated to Chaplin's movies. I love UAE and was told many years ago that they are working towards their main industry being tourism. They now have cruise ships visiting as a destination port, they also have a lot of ex-pats living and working there ... and of course the famous Dubai Golf Classic. Paul

Thanks Paul. I knew you've done some work in that area and figured you'd chime in hear eventually. I'm sure you were right at home and pleased to see their interest in Chaplin!

I performed in Dubai a lot in 2003/2004, including several corporate shows in both Jumeirah Beach hotel and the Burj. It was awsome! I was staying in both these hotels and I felt like a royalty!
I have been doing a lot of shows in Dubai for the Dubai Shopping Festival as well. There is a lot of work for magicians during this festival (January-February each year). Although Dubai offers a lot of opportunities for magicians and variety artists, you have to be aware of several things. Some of the local agents are not really good ones, so I've heard a lot of stories about bad things happening to entertainers. As for every international booking if your agent sends you to a foreign country, he is actually selling you to a local agent in that country. So there are several event organizers and agents in Dubai and some of them are very nice while some others are crooks. If you go there make sure that your agent knows the local agent there and that they have a successful cooperation for years. It did happen to me once that I had a very bad experience with an agent there as well (I don't know if I'm allowed to mention the name of the agency here in the main forum, so please PM me if you are interested in this), first he was very late with the payment, he paid at the end, but when I got back home and wanted to collect my cargo shipment (illusions) I found out that it hasn't been paid for, so I had to pay around 1 500 $ from my pocket. The agent that sent me there was in shock, but they couldn't do much either due to the fact that they are located in another country and it would cost an arm and leg to sue them. Apart from that one I worked with several very nice agents from Dubai and I never had problems with any one of them. |
