It wasn't a simple comment it was a barbed statement. Let's look at it again. You said this: "I hope you are not joking otherwise you must really be a newbie!" How is calling the guy a newbie not insulting? How is it helpful? If you were wondering if the guy was new to magic or performing for children why not just ask him in a polite way instead of making it an insult? Why did you feel the need to add an exclamation point? In this instance it makes it seem like shouting. Quote:
As for Mr. Hustle's suggestion that I insinuated a 'threat' with the off-the-cuff statement of 'better introduce yourself as one..." I also find that really ridiculous! How much of a threat can one pose over a Kidshow forum??? You'd be surprised. Again, lets look at your words: "Better to introduce yourself as one before posting on this forum!" Why had he better do anything? He had better introduce himself as one before posting, or what? What exactly will you do if he doesn't Bern? You see, demanding that someone do something (again see your exclamation mark) insinuates that something will happen if he doesn't do as you say. Those statements are rude. If you were not a newbie to the English language you would know that! And you had better not ever do it again! <- That is a smilie. That lets you know I was just kidding. Quote:
If I have inadvertedly offended anyone with my original post then I sincerely offer my apologies - no offense was intended on my part. I just wanted to answer the question about Mr. Abbott - whom I greatly admire for his contributions to our field. I did not intend to create the impression of 'incredible rudeness'. This is all you should have said. There was no need to call my statements ridiculous (particularly when they were not! ) You better play nice Bern. Mr. Hustle,
Obviously you can't take an apology and feel that you're a master of the English language. And you seem to take offense at a simple exclamation mark!!! Boy, you'd better be scared now coz I used THREE exclamation marks and also that ubiquitous phrase 'You'd better..." So that might constitute as a double threat. Give me a break...I've stated my position and if you can't take it then I see no need to continue to defend myself. I think I understand now why some peopel who have made good contributions to this forum have got fed up and ceased to post any further. No matter how I may have begun my post (and I don't think 'newbie' is an insult, but that's my opinion)I did offer a comprehensive answer to his question. By the way, I am NOT a nwebie to the English language and I hold a masters degree in the subject so I don't need a lecture on how to use phrases and puctuation from you. I didn't know we were on a linguistics forum but if you would like to discuss this on an academic level, then kindly PM me and I'll gladly direct you towards the relevant professional literature on this particular usage. Enough said...I used to enjoy the camaradie here but now perhaps not so much. This is definately my last posting on this subject - not because I am shying away from this verbal 'repartee' but I see no need to apologize further. |

FYI, the use of the modal verb 'should' also implied an 'obligation to do something'. So, Mr. Hustle, is that a 'barbed' threat' on your part too??? Why SHOULD I be obliged to edit my post or restrict it to your personal satisfaction??? |

You've done it now Bill...just when I was about to finish the bronze bust statue of you in front of the Baltimore Aquarium your head gets too big and I'm all out of bronze now. Oh well...guess we'll just make into a Chico. We know the chimp is the real entertainer anyway.

As far as people not posting because of the bullies you need to take a look in the mirror. Also take a look at what happened to the original poster. Who do you think chased him off you or me? You are very funny Bernie. Oh, and for the record it's not 'inadvertedly' it is inadvertently. Just call me Mr. Pedantic. I know my language skills are lacking, but they are still better than yours. Neener-neener-neener For the record I have both of Bill Abbott's DVDs and if you don't own them you should. Just great, great, stuff from a real worker. The best (and most original) version of ashes to hand I have ever seen. Best, Dan- P.S. I was also going to poke fun at the way Bernie spelled people in one of his posts but I am tired after working a two hour gig. I'm going to go light some incense in the novena that holds my Bill Abbott alter, say my prayers, worship in my own special way, and go to bed. For the record, I love all of you, but in a manly and platonic way. I am very rarely angry and certainly not in a situation as silly as this. <- means I'm kidding, well except about having a Bill Abbott Alter, that is very true. Sorry, Mr. Abbott, I'm going off topic again.
I am assuming Magicbern is a native speaker of English because his grammar is impeccable. He may not be using English in a way that some people are used to, and that may be the root of the problem in this thread. Native speakers of English in different parts of the world obviously use English in different ways. I have friends from Iran and India who I first mistook as rude because of the manner of their conversation (the words/expressions they chose to use sometimes sounded "strong" to me) Their English was perfect, I just wasn't used to the WAY they communicate. We are all sharing thoughts and ideas in an international forum where English is our only common language; sociolinguistics pretty much dictates there is going to be occassional miscommunication amongst forum members. That, along with the limitations of written discourse already pointed out by Chris may have contributed to the way some of us took Magicbern's first post. Someone mentioned that what Magicbern wrote didn't sound "right" to some of us. He apologized, cleared up what he meant, and that should be that.

I agree. I was only responding to Bern's comments about my, "low threshold for rudeness".
That was a comment directed at me and I responded to it, in a good natured way. I was kidding, and I said I was kidding so that there would be no misunderstanding in what I said. For some reason it seems Bernie took umbrage with that. I do still think it is a shame when people post a simple question like magicfish did and are chased off by people who are actually rude or only rude in appearance. I pointed that out. Bottom line is, Magicfish got chased off the thread he started and all he did was ask a question. That was my point from the start. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Bern,
I've been studying and practicing sleight of hand close up magic for almost 25 years. I'm not a "newbie". However, I do not perform for children. Having heard much about Bill Abbott, I was curious to know a little more about him; and what better place to find out about a children's performer than in this very forum? Magicfish |
