Hello again,
I don't know how many of you have this video but I am wondering if you found this same problem as I have. Everything is clear and understandable except one part. The res***** packet is folded and wrapped in the wire clip. But the video doesn't really tell you how to attach the res***** packet to the paper to be ripped. I watched it 6 times today and I continue to miss this. The wire clip is covered in newspaper and Gene tells us to place a film of rubber cement on top of that, so it is sticky I guess. He also speaks of placing a film of rubber cement where the res***** packet will sit. Then he says to place wax paper on top of that and let it sit. So my question is, how does the res***** packet stick to the paper to be ripped? If the wax paper is there, is it simply the stickiness of the wire clip that holds the packet onto the paper? Any help is appreciated, this is so weird to me, I guess I may just be a little too incompetent, because I have never heard of anyone mention this about the video before... Thanks in advance, DJ |

DJ:
Perhaps I can help you out as I perform this many times and had gene show me personally how to set it up. He never showed me the wax paper but I am thinking he may only be showing that as a way of letting both pieces dry. What I do is make the wire part and cover that in paper. Then I take the paper to be torn and open it up and I rubber cement the one square section. Then I place the wire paper thing and place that in the middle of the area on the paper to be torn. I then put more rubber cement over top of that. Then I take the res***** packet and while folded, I rubber cement the back of that and let it air dry. Then I attach that paper to the other paper and bring the wire piece around on both sides to hold it in place from opening. That essentially is how to attach everything. If you want more specifics, please let me know. I can not go into too much detail here without exposing everything. I also have some additional tips Gene showed me that has helped me in the performance of this piece and I can show you those as well. Hope this helps. Kyle

Kyle,
Thanks so much again! It is just so weird to me, the video is expertly made, Gene does a wonderful job with it. But I don't know if you have it, if you do, check it out, he never goes into any detail about attaching the 2 papers, he doesn't even say once what to do with them. But thanks so much for letting me know. I assumed they were just rubbered together but I thought about how I would wreck my clip each time, so in my mind that didn't seem right. Thanks so much kyle, DJ |

I have Gene's original manuscript notes and he signed them. There are pictures in it and it does a wonderful job of showing you exactly how to make it step by step. I still have it as it is the copy Gene gave me himself. I think that may have been an oversight cause often times magicians just assume people will know what to do without really covering everything in detail. I hope my information above was of help to you. If you have any other questions, just let me know.

What kind of rubber cement do you'll use?

Just any normal, regular rubber cement. I use Elmers brand I think, but any kind will work just fine for your needs.

As to the wax paper: the manuscript explains that the packet should not be stored folded up or it won't open smoothly. You should spread glue on both papers and let it dry but don't adhere them yet. The wax paper is to protect the glue until you put everything together right before showtime.
In theory dried rubber cement won't stick to anything except itself. The wax paper is to prevent it from disproving that theory! Incidentally, I've been unable to find "stovepipe wire" (no one in Florida has stovepipes...). However, I found that 14 gauge solid copper wire makes a good substitute. It's a little thicker, but just as bendable and will hold things secure. |

I get my wire at Home Depot. It is steel wire, works very well, and is cheap.

Why mess with all the messy set up?
I use Robert Baxt's gimmick which eliminates all the gluing etc,... and it's fast. It is still the Anderson tear but using a different gimmick. You will find it if you do a search.
