He kept saying "look if you got nothin to do, you can make $150" I said I do offer a 30 min show without balloons, for $150. But he still wanted the hour show for $150. I did not accept. He then tried the old trick of "We'll take good care of you." It was very difficult to not say, "Like a $50 tip?", He added, "I will tell all my friends about you, you'll get lots more work." Why do these people not understand that that does not mean very much. |

If people tell me that they can't afford my fee,(and this is after I describe my experience and what they get in a birthday show) I say "Well, you could call the local magic shop and see if they have a less experienced performer available. They might be more in line with your budget" and I give them the number.
I am polite and let them shop around. Often they end up calling me back and booking, and if not, they may call me in the future when they have a bigger budget.

I suppose. Our local magic shop knows all the local performers and does recommend. The other message it subtly implies is that if you want to spend less, you can always get a beginner rather than an entertainer with years of experience.

If the client tries to barter down on my price, I usually say no. Ocassionly I knock off £10 ($15) if the client asks the 'right' way. I respect someone who at least tries to save money, or simply wants to enetratin their child, put doesn't want to pay extreme prices. Its work afterwall.
If they demand it, or talk-down to me because of my price, they I won't budge. I won't be insulted just because one person doesn't want to pay the proper price. But I have on occasion offered to do a reduced price if the performance was during the week. (I have more shows as weekends, and weekdays free) So by moving the clients date to a time when I had no work, it meant I had extra income. Most times they say no, in which case end of conversation. But for the few times it has worked, its put more money in my pocket. I don't change my prices for charity shows or old-peoples homes, simply because I could be doing another childrens show at the full rate. Its not about the cost to them, its about how much I have to lose to perform for them. By doing a free show for someone, means I'm losing the money I could have made from someone else, Its costing me money! You get a lot of it at Christmas, in which case, I offer to do a free show after christmas, but not before. steve |

Working in a tourist town I am asked every week about my 'locals' rate. I've thought about it a lot and decided I am actually very happy to set a 'locals' rate... as soon as I start getting a 'locals' rate on bread, meat, telephone calls, cups of coffee, cars etc etc etc

I rarely have someone that cannot afford my rate, try to negotiate.
I find the opposite, I find that it is the well to do people that try to negotiate with me. They seem to think that they are entitled to a lower price. Either way, I don't negotiate. Once in a while when I find someone stretching their budget (because they really can't afford me) to hire me because they really, really want me there, I might stay & give them some extra time as a gift. |
