Well, I finally acquired an original Gaughan-built Interlude illusion-- one I've wanted for a very long time. It has always been one of my favorites, and I've always wanted to perform it. The construction is superb, but I definitely need some help regarding the performance and handling the illusion. I have opted not to use the f*** l** method, and the illusion came shipped with it disassembled. I have all the necessary items to make it work, but do not know how to reassemble it. My understanding is that most people who perform Interlude do not use that system, but rather employ a t**** to allow the pass through.
After trying the illusion several times, I have trouble holding a natural stance while allowing the "penetration" to occur. Furthermore, my assistant seems to be having trouble as it is a "tight squeeze". I am 5'11" about 175 lbs, and the illusion was built for someone of my stature. Is this the nature of the illusion-- just requiring considerable practice to get the penetration correct, or am I doing something wrong? Everything just seems real jerky and unnatural--which is very unlike the performances I have seen. I don't see how the f^^^ l^^ would offer any benefit in terms of additional room. I really need advice from some of you pros out there. Feel free to PM me so we can discuss the method in detail. Also, you can e-mail me directly at prolink18@aol.com with some ideas. I love the prop, and really want to make it part of my act....it just seems very tough to do. Regards, Jonathan Schweid |

I have used one and I would strongly advise using the fake. It gives a lot of extra room, which is still a very tight fit. Email me if you want to talk more in depth about this: briansmagic@valleyint.com
Definitely not an easy one to pull off. |

I will e-mail you. I agree...it's definitely tough. I've performed several different illusions, but this one sort of has me puzzled on how to pull it off!

I purchased an Interlude (for collection purposes only, I am way too big to do it) years ago from a magician I know. He sold it dirt cheap because he was sick of trying to do it and hearing his assistants complain about it. Sounds like he was in the same boat as you and just decided to give up. I have no performance rights but I still enjoy saying I own one because it is one of my favorite Illusions.

I will contact him. There a few other minor things I need to know, like how to set up the f*** l** system if I want to use it. Additionally, the spandex on the front needs to be replaced--I have done that, but I'm not sure if there is a better way to do it--I just followed what the previous owner did.
Do you think he'll be willing to help me even though I bought the illusion second-hand? It's a tremendous illusion, and I want it to work. It cost enough! Everyone who has PM'ed me, thanks. Anyone else have some ideas out there? Jon |

Johnny is 'good people'. I've never heard of him not helping anyone with an illusion he built, even if it was second-hand.

Jonathan, call or email me with any questions...
I don't use the gimmick and have adapted several things to my Gaughan Interlude which make it easier... including not eating any sort of bread or pasta a few days before I know I'm going to have to perform it...

Hey,
Again, I appreciate all the help! You guys are great. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to attach the spandex to the front frame so that it conceals the inside of the cabinet as the assistant passes through? I redid mine, and the first time she went through, it stretched, and you could see right through! Regards, Jonathan |

How many layers of spandex are you using? Using multiple layers with the seam going in different directions (i.e. horizontal, vertical, diagonal) will help prevent this problem.

Another solution is just to increase the size of the overlap by a bit. You could always combine this idea with the multiple layers as well if you are really nervous about flashing.

Yes, the spandex will stretch. You could try double-layering it similar to what is done on the windshear spandex. You have both a horizontal layer with an overlap as well as vertical layer with an overlap.

I will try the overlapping spandex. Incidentally, I spoke with Jim Steinmeyer about the illusion. He feels that it looks better with the f*** l** method overall...and sees magicians struggling to pull it off without. In short, he mentioned that a (then) thin Copperfield could pull it off...also because he could afford an anorexic gymnist to contort through. My assistant is not anorexic, nor does she plan on becomming anytime soon. I'm not sure how much extra space the thing generates, but it is slightly more and, per Steinmeyer, looks more natural. The downside...the needed misdirection with the gimmick. Bottom line, I'm going to try both ways, and see which works best. Maybe I need to lose a few pounds as well, although I'm told that my proportions are pretty much perfect for the illusion.
Everyone has been so helpful with this. I would welcome any further suggestions with the handling of the prop! Best regards, Jonathan Schweid |

The misdirection to pull it off is not much...I would hardly call it misdirection. When the assistant steps in front to attach the spandex frame, make the move. It can be tricky, but there is not all that much to it once you've figured out how to do it.

This is a funny thread. Some years ago, I watched a TV magic show by a quite-fat magician, and he was doing interlude! That's the BEST interlude I have ever seen! Because his body is so big! After the girl went thru, he took the front frame away instantly! Then people can see his big fat body! I swear there is absolutely NO space that the girl could possibly pass thru.
Don't just dream, stay awake and action!

How much does one cost.? I'm only 5"6 and fairly thin..I'd need one scaled down..
I have a killer presentation to go with it. |

Sperris made a good point a few posts ago - Don't eat any high carbs a day or two before you perform this. Also - pop a couple of "Gas X" a few hours beforehand. It will rid your digestion system of any excess gas. (It makes a huge difference, you know!)
If you and your assistant are thin enough to pull it off without the f*** l***, it will make the exit much cleaner. (Don't worry about the set-up...the audience doesn't know what's about to happen and won't be looking for anything.) However, don't trade a natural transition for a clean exit. Only you can decide what looks best. (Which is not always the same as what feels best!) Good luck.

Well my solution I use for interlude is this: I simply supply my assistant with a scapel and some forceps. She seems to have no problem getting through, but I am spending a fortune on medical bills.
Sorry, had a funny moment. I don't get them often, so I'm mainly entertaining myself.
making the unreal, real...really!

Sperry lives!! Why don't you tell them a few of your Interlude stories?? Like the one about the girl who bailed out after discovering bruises up and down her leg. Or how about the crazy chick that plays Dungeons and Dragons.
Oops, I've said too much ... Steve |
