With the X-MAS season approaching and me having made my magic wishlist already, I'm interested in hearing what you guys think...should I ask for a Playstation 2 or an X-Box? Thanks.

From those two, PS2 but do look into GameCube. After I got mine, I never touched anything else.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell can only be found on XBOX.
The best console graphics for any game ever created for any machine....period... The highest rated game in history! Try the game....infrared goggles, retinal scanners, optic cables for looking underneath doors., proximity mines, intelligent rapid fire weapons, etc.... Gotta go now..only two levels left! |

GameCube.
Why? Eternal Darkness. That's enough for me. :firedevil:

What about an Atari 2600? I hear they're pretty popular.

I suggest PS2. I can't justify buying a system based on one game or it's graphics potential. You have to look at all the games. Look into the GC though like mvmagic said. I have PS2 and GC and I use them both equally.
On the other hand, you have different fingers.

If you waited to get a console every time a new one was coming out around the corner...by the time you got one you'd probably be too old to see the screen.I recommend the PS 2 ...I have all three and agree x-box and GC have a few excellent games for them. The PS 2 has a ton of them and many more too come. Although the x-box has very high capabilities I have yet to see them be utilized. Overall the PS2 is the best bang for your buck.
Just my two cents Brandon |

the greatest system ever: NES. the reason: the game Dragon Warrior.

Actually the x-box has a very large range of games which is expanding like wildfire. Also it has many games that the PS2 will never have and are better than the PS2 will ever have. So for me and hopefully you it's X-box all the way.

X-box is the most powerful
Thanks

I definitely agree that the x-box is the most powerful...the fact remains that it has yet to be utilized...all three consoles have exclusive games and the x-box is coming out with a couple excellent exclusive games...but so are the playstation and gamecube...I think that people posses a bias for the system they own. Sorta like people routing for their favorite sports team even though it is not the better team...I own ALL three and can tell you that OVERALL the playstaion has the most quality(not necessarily quantity)games...if you don’t believe me go take a look at gamepro.com or xpertgamer.com and you will find most of the game's that got good reviews are for the PS2.
But I certainly hope that all the systems will come out with equally good games sometime in the future--but that is not the case as it stands now--. Longbeach, NES is the greatest system ever for so many reasons. Brandon |

This is wierd. I bought a PS2 when it first came out. Now, with no abuse, and actually very little use, it doesn't play DVD's, and only certain games (the ones that are discs, not DVDs). My brother told me there are rumors that Sony engineers their products to break down after a while to encourage upgrades and replacements. Some term like "Planned Obselesence" or something like that. Anybody ever hear of such a thing?

I don’t believe that sony intentionally made anything so it would break down after a certain amount of use...I believe any company that employed such a tactic would soon gain the reputation that they produced faulty products (except for Nike)...the problem you are experiencing sound's like a hardware problem...causes--dropping, long periods of use (8 or more hrs) , spilling something, strong static electricity exposure, and the list goes on. But you say you didn’t use it much so it might have been a problem from the assembly line. My best advice would be to contact Sony...their usually pretty good about warranty issues. Or take it to a T.V. repair shop if it’s not under warranty. It doesn’t sound like a DVD driver problem...but then again I don’t work for Sony...so im just speculating.

Brandon: In the manufacturing world, this tactic is called "Planned obsolescence" and yes it is practiced in many companies. It is not to deceive the public but to keep the market fresh with the lastest products. I'm not saying Sony does this, only that it does exist.

I don't think Sony planned for the DVD to break down, however I'm sure they knew it would happen. The fact is if you look at the specs for the dvd module installed in the PS2 you will notice it was the cheapest and of poorest quality that was offered in dvd players at the time. Sony basically just threw that in to make the system appear more appealing. To make a long story short the dvd player in the PS2 is crap.
The Xbox, according to it's unit specs will inform you that it has a far superior dvd unit installed complete with digital and dolby sound which the PS2 is also lacking. With it's new broadband only online play complete with friend lists and real time voice chat and it's superior graphics, it is the console of choice right now. Besides PS2 is almost done, if you insist on a Sony platform, then you should wait for PS3 which will be out in the next year. P.

Maestro makes a fine point.
Each console has a slightly different range of games. Because the three are almost identical in terms of their various pros and cons, have a think about the type of games you would rather be playing and make your choice accordingly. I own a Cube but have no bias towards it. I have played on the others and they are all fantastic.
Hello.
