I love the real world reactions. This might be the closest thing we can achieve to making it rain. I want one Peter!! July's too far away.

I don't mean to rain on anyone's party, but I guess I just don't get what is so mysterious about the Rainmaker effect. It is pretty obvious what the method has to be, so where is the mystery/magic? Maybe it plays better live, but I believe that GWAR has been doing the same thing at their shows for years.

I think its the fact that the magician's hands are in full view the entire time along with the unexpected shock of actual rain, no one EVER expects this, and no one we performed it for had any clue as to the source of the rain. Also the Mystery/Magic is in the presentation, the story telling, combined with the elements mentioned above, and if you don't understand that, you better get out of magic while you can...kidding ofcourse.
The possibilities of rainmaker are not limited, and it doesn't have to be a stand alone effect, take Doug Higley's combo effect for instance. At anyrate, its obvious like anything in the world not everyone is going to like everything, as a magic creator you will never be able to please every magician, but all I can say is don't knock it until you try it!

Peter- I am sure that in the right hands it is an awesome effect... you always put a lot of thought in to your effects, so I am sure that this is no different. Being rained upon with cold water is a pretty unexpected event I will give you that. You are correct - I have not seen it live, and I have not had my hands on it, so I have no real business even commenting on it I suppose so I will just keep my trap shut, like I should have in the first place. It's been a tough week for me - and it was wrong for me to comment negatively about something I have ony seen demonstrated in a video, and have only read about. It's just that when I read about the effect the first thing that came to my mind was GWAR, though I suppose it is not recommended to use red food coloring with Rainmaker Seriously - congratulations on what will obviously be a best-selling effect.

Marvello, thanks for your comments, I too had some similar thoughts as you did when I was first developing Rainmaker, but it wasn't until I actually started performing with it a while back that I knew I had something unusual that left a very strong impact on my spectators.
The problem with our demo video is that once the film is transfered to the computer and is compressed to a lower resolution for online streaming the rain becomes difficult to see since the video becomes more grainy and pixelated. In a live atomsphere or on an actual video tape the rain is obvioulsy very visible. So the demo really doesn't do it justice in that respect. This is why we felt it was very important to focus more on the reactions of the spectators in live performance to showcase the true effectiveness of the illusion, and the different impacts it has on different people. As far as GWAR, I don't know what that is, so I cannot comment. Perhaps you can fill me in. Again thanks for sharing your thoughts and your question, it was a good question, heck like I mentioned before I had the same thought at first, so don't appologize for what you said. I understand totally. P.

Gwar is a satanic shock rock band. They perform in giant foam monster costumes and utilize a number of giant puppets. A "Tame" performance of theirs is in the movie "Empire Records", both in the film and in the special features.
Very theatrical shows, with a lot of gore and urm..."Bodily fluds" being sprayed into the audience. If their performances were not with giant foam monsters, they would be deemed obscene for depictions of sex and violence (Involving chainsaws and absurdly large weapons)combined with penultimate sacrelige and blasphemy. Yeah...I've seen a few shows on video. Disturbing, yet compelling. Wouldn't want to see them live though. Gwyd, whose sensabilities are not easily offended, but they came close... |

Is Gwar still around? Good grief.
Marvello...from what I know (heheheh) of the actual effect...this will NOT be an obvious method. Not at all. Peter has busted the techno envelope on this one. "and it was wrong for me to comment negatively about something I have ony seen demonstrated in a video, and have only read about." If only some others had your good sence. You are appreciated. Doug

GWAR is not a "satanic shock rock band," but the complexities of their backstory are not important. GWAR is a band from Richmond VA, (and yes, they are still touring after all these years- a remarkable testament to their dedication to their act). I have met the guys in the band several times and they are serious, dedicated musicians. They don't rely on props alone, and are actually great musicians - it's kind of like acrobatic clowns who roller skate- they have to be really good to pull off what they do. Here is what wikipedia has to say about them:
Quote: They toured with the Jim Rose Sideshow at one time, and Zamora, the torture king, has toured with Danielle (Slymenstra - her character in GWAR) and her "All Girly Freak Show"GWAR is a thrash metal/punk band formed in 1985 by a collective of artists and musicians at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. The band is best known for their elaborate sci-fi/horror film inspired costumes, raunchy lyrics, and graphic stage performances, which consist of humorous re-enactments of scatology, sadomasochism, necrophilia, pedophilia, bestiality, fire dancing, pagan rituals, executions, and other controversial violent and political themes. GWAR has been on the leading edge of shock rock since their formation.

When I first heard of them in 1992, they were billing themselves as Satanic...I was living in Newport News VA at the time, and there was a HUGE amount of hype about that...It was about the time they introduced the rape of a priest with a cross...And even in the Wikipedia they were listed as shock rock.
And yes...They definately do have musical talent (Sorry if I didn't include that!) Worth seeing (In any format! I just don't want to get all yucky seeing them live...I do that enough in my own shows), but it is a show I would say is not for the faint of heart. Gwyd |

Oh Ok, I know who you guys are talking about now. I vaguely remember them. And sadly I must admit I also saw Empire Records...lol. The name looked familiar but I couldn't place it. Thanks everyone for bringing me up to date.

Has Peter come up with an ingenious, unfathomable method of causing rain to fall from the sky, that works by secretly creating a large density of positive ions through some bizzare scientific process? The positive ions rapidly attract any moisture in the surrounding air, causing an instant rainstorm!
Or has he come up with a professional, easy to use, tried and tested apparatus that can achieve the same effect? Rainmaker is apparently offering us a chance to create a very different kind of effect, yet also it's really quite similar to the old water squirting flower gag. Getting your audience wet is what it's all about, and after reading all about GWAR, some folks obviously like to get their audiences more involved than others! Maybe Peter could quote me for a device to make it rain snot? |

Don't dismiss the comedy aspects of this either. Anyone who ever saw an old time rainmaker act at a theme park (like a medicine show kinda sorta) can appreciate that here is an oportunity to do that act with OUT the wagon or permanent fixtures etc. All you need it a Drum and you have an entire act with out anything else...oh yeah...hat...you need a hat. It offers an ideal spot to ask for the money... PLUS you can offer a gurantee that they will get their money back if it doesn't rain. Wrong thread for comedy routines BUT...

Curious as to the repeatability of this effect. Can you do this more than once without re-setting? Twice? Dozens of times?

I worked with a guy that did a rain maker act at Busch Gardens years ago.
People love it. Always thought it would play well on the real streets. Jim H.O.a-X

Potty the Pirate-I agree, getting your audience wet plays a huge part in the entertainment of this illusion!
Doug I totally agree with you too, you could definately turn it into some sort of comedy act! Entity-As per our website: "Automatic Reset, and Instantly Repeatable" Jim what was the act like at Busch Gardens? Can you explain what happened in the act?

Peter...the one I saw was at Magic Mountain (now a six flags gang hold out).
The guy did a bogus Medficine man act alternating with a rain Maker. He would speech-i-fy about the Drought and how through the miracle and power of unknown forces it was he and he alone who could make it rain on command. BUT he needed believers...so he had a few small umbrellas that he offered to only those who believed in his powers...most folks didn't and he was half hearted at handing them out...(hehhehheh)...then he got a kid out of the crowd and gave him a Drum and a drum stick and told hiom to pound the drum! Boom Booom Booom...send those shock waves into the sky...wake up the Thunder......chanting with the crowd...make it rain make it rain...does anybody want the umbrella yet...I know it's sunny...I know it's dry as a bone...Booom booom booom...but folks I have a perfect record...so I'll tell ya what I'll do...I'll RENT these unbrellas for a dollar and you wont be sorry...booom booom booom and then out of nowhere (well...somewhere) there was a big shower of RAIN! All in the presentation and script...lots of weather gags and farmer gags etc.

A tip on talent release forms: One of the tricks to getting people to sign a release form is to have them sign before the effect happens! If they don't sign you wont have wasted your or your crew's time.

Peter,
Doug, pretty much described the same type of act as the guy I worked with. He had large cart with a phony equipment set up on it. Looked sort of cartoon like. Had a wind sound machine that a spec would crank and a peice of sheet metal for another to make thunder. Would get them all chanting and shaking things. Then it would rain. The gaff was in the top of a lamp post and worked great. Jim
