Maybe the wrong spot to post, but I was just wondering if anyone has seen a vent act that includes magic as well? I never saw Jasper do Lefty, so perhaps maybe he incorporated some magic with that bit and I just didn't know about it...anyway, feedback would be appreciated.

I have seen a few people do comedy mentalism as a vent act, goes over very well. But magic? Nope, never seen it.

Rocky,
In the past I have used" the other dummy aka AHA" in comedy mentalism. Being a magician or vent is creating the illusion. We try to think and act outside the box and as always focus on the audience's needs. Aha and I have specialized with educating children about holiday themes and age related safety ideas. Hope this helped. Phil and Aha |

I combine magic and vent all the time. They are definitely allied arts.
I highly recommend Bill Boley's book VENTRILO-MAGIC. You can get it from Maher Studios and I think also from Axtell Expressions. Bill had lots of clever ideas for combining magic and ventriloquism. See ya! Joe L.

One idea might also be to begin the trick with the spectator and then intorduce your vent partner to complete the effect..such as a chosen card revelation etc. the comedy mind reading act with the paper bag over the figures head is a hoot! have a hole in the back of the bag so he can "peek" and it gets laughs.

Good question! I just put up on-line two great resources for combining puppets and magic.
The first is a radio interview I did with Magic Broadcast. "Backstage Pass with Michael Young". We discuss magicians adding a puppet to their act, and how it helps sell their show. We also demnonstrate our AxTrax CDs and answer questions from listeners. The second is a series of 5 articles I've written for SMOKE & MIRRORS. I cover the basics of using a puppet in a magic show, as well as have many tricks and suggestions from Tom Ladshaw and a discussion about how to get started in Ventriloquism. Both of these and lots more are available at http://www.axtell.com/cafe.html A special page for Magicians. Best! Ax

Steve Taylor has a DVD showing how to add magic with your venting. I do a change bag/dove pan with my figure and I've done a card trick with them as well.
Dad, magic, ventriloquism, facepainter & balloons.

I am a full-time magician doing primarily corporate events.
After I taught myself to do vent, I thought a 15 minute ventriloquism bit, as part of my show, would be a nice option to offer clients. The puppet, Axtell's Old Storyteller, has proven to be such a hit it has now become a regular part of the show. The puppet does not do any magic and probably never will. The dialogue I have written, which took me over a year to write, is working so well that I wouldn't want to mess with it. If you are a magician looking to offer your prospective clients something a bit different, I can definitely recommend adding vent to your act. Just be sure that you are a competent vent and have a very good routine or dialogue for your character. In my opinion, whether or not the character does magic is probably not as critical as the dialogue itself. The addition of vent to my show has definitley increased my business. Clients tell me they like the fact that the show is unique and there is no one else with an act like mine for hundreds of miles around. The show, which among other things contains several "exclusive" magic effects, clean stand-up comedy, music and now vent, really does make it a unique show in my area. No competition is a wonderful thing for your bottom line. |

I do ventriloquism and magic and have recently started developing ways to have the puppet actually do the magic. A lot can be done with one handed change bags and things like that.
We also do a comedy mentalism routine too.
