If Doug were around today, he might still be running for The Natural Law party in Canada's federal elections. Maybe he'd even be prime minister.

He was a great performer and brought a whole new generation into magic. That includes performers and his audiences. Doug was very skilled and performed difficult sleight of hand LIVE on TV. His greatest gift was his ability to connect with an audience regardless of their age. His passion turned to other pursuits and its difficult to excell when your heart is now somewhere else. I would have loved to have seen perform again. But I still have good memories of his TV specials and performances in theatres.

Here's a very rare handbill from Doug's show in Toronto at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. I'll post the backside below.

Its such a shame that more is not known about Merlin - from all accounts, it was groundbreaking for that time.

Doug certainly was a major influence on magic. While the world understood the difference between a comic or comedian and a comic actor, and understood the difference between comedy and comic theater, for the world of magic, at that time, there was basically only a concept of magicians. Doug certainly taught the world that there was such a thing as magic theater and magician/actor as contrasted to the magic stage show and the stage magician. He fathered a whole different direction in magic production numbers and use of magic in theater. No question he was far ahead of his own time. But, it is also clear that Doug was a man with many interests and aspects to his life, and while magic was certainly one of them, it was not his sole purpose and direction in life. He made his mark and moved on to make his mark in other areas. And while I presume in his return to magic he would have again given us some new ideas and directions, and probably would have shown us a totally different direction in magic than he had previously taken, I honestly believe that Doug would have again gone on to other pursuits in other areas as he did the first time. I certainly appreciate the time we had him and the ideas he gave us.

I have a program of The Magic Show at the Cort Theatre which is signed by Doug and Dale Soules, who played his assistant at the time. I also have a record of the original cast recording for that show. It came with a "hexaflexagon" inside that I no longer have. Wish I did because it was really cool. I found instructions for how to make one in one of Martin Gardners books.
When I was twelve years old, I saw Doug on Broadway and it changed my life. I was hooked on magic from that moment on and wanted to learn everything I could about it. Doug wasn't just a magician; he was Magic! |

I was lucky to get my hands on a signed program from Merlin (It's probably one of favorite things of all time! lol) and a program from The Magic Show. It's funny because I came across the dvd of the show a week after I got the programs. I even ended up doing a version of "Lion Tamer" with some tricks to it for a local concert/talent show. Gotta Love the Amazing Doug Henning! I only wish I could have had the opportunity to see one of his broadway shows, as I can only imagine how amazing seeing one of them must have been!

I saw Doug when I was growing up in MI. He performed at the Fox Theatre in Detriot. I've been involved in magic for many years as just a hobby and I just recently stumbled upon this online community. For an elder such as myself it's nice to see so many people keeping the art of magic alive. But back to Doug's show, it was seriously one of the best shows I've ever seen. He has this nature of seeming to be extremely amazed and shocked by the magic that he was making happen. His expressions were priceless, may God rest his soul.

Doug was a great guy,and very dedicated to magic. Had lunch with him the weekend he was in Montreal auditioning for the Canada Council grant. He had just received the Harbin book and was having his Zig-zag being built (now, where is that piece???)
Interesting memorabilia I have: An 8" x 10" colour photo of Doug performing in mime (whiteface) as Chou-Chou the magic shoemaker in a mall. And the B&W publicity shot for the show (3 images). The Footwear Bureau Of Canada shoemaker coin with Doug's image, their 4 page newsletter with photos of the show autographed by Doug to me. An autographed (to me) Playbill of each of Doug's Broadway shows. A coffee house flyer announcing Doug Henning and Mars (one of his first assistants) (For the younguns, this was where folk artists performed) A collection of approx. 80 4" x 6" colour photos from his World of Magic show (Oh yes, I also have his 28' x 50' black velour starlight curtain from the auction, in a hamper, weighing in at 1/2 ton!!! This came with the "ShaZzam!" Show when I purchased it) Many magazines, programs etc. Note: If anyone is interested in purchasing the "Spellbound" handbill shown above (I was the source for it) I have a very (very)limited supply of mint condition ones. They sold as high as $50.00 on E-bay, and when I sent the couple out, I included photocopies of the Spellbound reviews. PM me. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"
