Where (preferably in th UK) would I be able to find a monkey's paw, I would rather purchase one singly rather than in a collection of other items.
Thanks in advance |

You won't have to look far. Doug Higley makes the best, at least of artificial ones. Talk with him!

They are not that hard to make from craft store moulding compound and "fur" from black or brown yarn. Make a little "skeleton" hand from pipe cleaners and mold the compound around it.
It will be very lightweight, just like you would expect of a mummified hand.

Those on a budget can modify the "ghoulchaser" monkey paw, for cheap, to make it look a little less mummified and little more monkey-ish ...?
Actually, ghoulchaser distributes them for Karl Achilles, who is the real maker of these, as far as I know. Then I learned how to make them myself from scratch, while going through a Walgreens one night just after Halloween, looking for bargains. However, it's still basically Karl's idea. I had the idea of adding the white hair to it.

There is a fellow who is a fairly well-known story teller who explained in one of his lectures that you could make a monkey's paw from a plastic backscratcher hand and hair from the family pet. I haven't seen one, but I heard from another fellow who is "in the know" that these "paws" look exactly like what they are -- a little piece of plastic junk with hair all over it.
When you are doing stories, the props really must look right. Otherwise, the audience will be distracted by the props. Think of your story as a piece of theatre. Imagine, if you will, a really good Sci-Fi movie. Now imagine a Roger Corman production -- marginal, but acceptable. Now imagine Ed Wood -- with tombstones that fall over when the actors bump into them. I think you get the point.

I carry Karl's paws (for purposes of retail resale) and own a Higley as well. I use the Higley for more presentational things (Dark Museum, more formal displays) and the one from Karl for in-the-trenches magic. Mine are available with the built-in blister effect or in Karl's "deluxe" version that also has the gimmick to do a "rising paw" effect in your own palm. (Special thanks to Karl for letting me stock this item!)
For the retail price, I'm more comfortable with letting an audience "play" with the smaller paw. Doug's paw is larger and durable, but is in its own display case at present. I should also note that it is one of the few "holy grails" of my collection as I had been looking for YEARS for a decent-looking paw and hadn't come across one until I saw Doug's work. Email me (please no PM because I swear I wait too long to check them and lose messages) for either info on Karl Achilles' Monkey Paws or as many glowing accolades about Doug's work as you can handle. Just curious in relation to fear of a pandemic with the bird flu:
Does anyone out there have any concerns about using rooster or turkey feet/claws as props? Chris |

If you wanna use rooster or turkey feet/claws you have to fried or roast it before, that way, the bird fluwe virus will die.
