Some people think that DC is trying to, how do you say... 'beat' DB, by doing a lot more close up tricks. Like in his Tornado Of Fire special, you'd notice a lot more close up effects— the scorpion, etc. And not only that, he went on the street to do 'Laser', and that wasn't really a good idea. Firstly, I've heard that because of that, the method was easily caught and also it implies he's trying to get 'down and dirty' on the streets like DB.
What do you all think? Personally, I think DC is trying something new, so good for him— plus this is a good opportunity for DB to 'claim' back his domain which is the street. Hahaha, that coming from a DC fan! Cheers, Logan

DC doesn't have to worry about DB. It's not even close. I have no idea why people try to compare the two. There are far better closeup magicians than DB but there are none better than DC [closeup or stage].

Comparing the two is like comparing a Phillips screwdriver to a Robinsons screwdriver. They do completely different things.
Neither is better than the other...they are simply too different.

I've noticed that seemingly all the "big" names: Criss Angel, DC, etc...seem to be trying to "beat" David Blaine. But each performer has his own style, method, presentation, etc...so neither "competitor" can really "win". That's why I've never understood the point of competitions in our art— trying to judge which performer is better is like trying to judge between a shark and an anaconda. I'm sure of one thing though: If DB is the one to challenge, then he's definitely earned himself a great spot in magic.

I think there really isn't a competition here. All of these performers are HIGHLY unique, and are all very talented. There is no need for them to copy each other or try to out-do each other.
Personally I would love to see 10,000,000 more TV specials focusing on close-up work. All magicians are unique in one way or another, and even more likely if they are talented enough to get their own TV special. More magic period. Jeff McBride, Paul Harris, Eugene Burger, and well there is no point listing them all, they all deserve their own TV specials, close-up or stage! I find it very sad that there are SO MANY great magicians who never get the air time they deserve! I would love to see a weekly 1 hour nation wide show, serving as a means of exposure for all of the countless talented magicians out there. Especially for those "magician's magicians", the ones we all flock to see at conventions, etc.! They don't need to beat each other, just share their art with the world and hopefully entertain and inspire viewers!

Two different styles, apples and oranges, both DC and DB are both excellent in their own styles...

Since you can't mix apples and oranges, one wants to take the bite out of the other. lol

Copperfield does not need to compete. He will always be superior and a great guy. As for David Copperfield showing more close-up... He is definitely not trying to beat out Blaine, but rather I like watching David Copperfield's graceful and flawless sleight of hand.

The two are very different performers, indeed. However, I do believe D.C. lowered his standards by going to the streets. His performances are for theatre. What was the point of taking his show to the streets, was it to prove something?

Didn't DC do the linking bands and other close-up long before Ammar and Henning?

Have yet to see anyone beat DC on stage charisma and personality. You see, all the while, laymen don't get exposed to close-up magic. When we talk about magic, they think it's rabbits, doves, David Copperfield, tigers, etc.
What DB has done was in my opinion promote close-up magic to the world— that's about it. He ain't got the look of a mystery man that DC has (and I am worse than DB). |

I think DB is winning the mind share of the public. DB is considered cool, young, hip, etc.

This reminds me of the episode of South Park with the David Blaine cult being challenged by historical and religious icons. It was totally irreverent but not overly offensive. It may also make a good "what if" comic book!

I just got back from Vegas a few weeks ago and got a chance to see Copperfield... I had not seen him in 7 or 8 years.
He's got nothing to worry about. He's so far above everybody else— what a truly great magician he is. Ron Reid |

Any kind of competition between the two is pointless. How would anybody be able to judge? Their styles are just too different.

DC and DB... David vs David. I agree with Iceraven. They don't even do the same style of performing, there would be no way to judge the two. Both of these performers are great in their own ways. I love 'em both.

It's not a matter of who would win or not. That's not the question. The question is,
"Is Copperfield trying to beat Blaine" and the answer of course is YES. Like it's some coincidence that Copperfield is taking full scale illusions out on the street. Copperfield has had the market on magic television for years now. So he obviously feels threatened by Blaine's presence. As for what everyone else on this thread is talking about, Copperfield is only getting better. And while Blaine has obviously read all the Harris books and seems to understand the whole "AOA" thing, he will not be around forever, unlike Copperfield. Matt |

Is it even possible for one magician to "beat" another?
