Hey gang~
I am doing a magic consulte for a college play of The Cherry Orchard and I need to have a deck of cards disappear after the magician in the play does a trick with it. The action is that she claps her hands and the cards disappear. So I was thinking of like a deck pull. Is there such a thing and if so where could I find one? Or does anyone have any other suggestions. The costume is like a wizard costume with baggie sleeves. No time to do topit because Tech is in two weeks. Help, Richard |

Hi Richard,
I don't know about a deck pull but it is possible. You might also be able to use something that a wizard would also use to vanish the deck like his hat, e.g., have a divider in the hat with velcro. The wizard throws the deck in the hat, close the flap, the velco keeps the section closed and the wizard motions over the hat and turns it upside down. The deck is gone. The deck pull could be to take a deck of cards and drill a hole in the bottom. Thread some elastic through the hole and tie it off at the end of the deck. That would still allow you to fan the cards. The other end of the deck would run up the sleeve and be tied off some place under the armpit. You would need to find a strong enough elastic to allow the deck to pull up the sleeve. In regards to the card trick, perhaps the wizard would fan out the cards and ask the person in the play to think of one. The wizard then reads the persons mind by naming the card. Then the pull is used to vanish the deck. These are just a couple of ideas and I'm sure you will come up with something if you put your mind to it. Best Wishes, Steve |

Paper deck shells that crumple up into a small paper ball.
The name currently escapes me, but they're in every well equiped online suppliers catalog. |

A deck pull existed some time ago. You can make one by bending some springy metal in a U-shape (like the clip on a garage door opener used to hold it on the visor of your car). Attach it to a strong elastic. Slip it onto the deck and let 'er go.

Where will the cards be? In the magicians hand or hands, on the table or what?
If the cards are on the table, can they stay there once they vanish, if the audience can't see them? Ray |

I've consulted on a couple of plays that needed magic. The Disposable Deck probably won't play as well for a large theater audience, you need a big visual. The deck pull would be a great idea. Steve's idea sounds perfect. I've made pulls from Wal-Mart elastic and they've worked fine. Just don't think like a magician, remember nothing needs to be inspected and there's no need to reset right away. Best of Luck

Check out Nate Kranzo's dvd Outside the box, specifcally 'Peak Vanish'. From what you ask it sounds like it could be ideal.

I would use a topit. Use a little misdirection, throw it in the topid, and make it vanish.

Richard,
I'm not 100% sure on the staging (ie: after the wizard performs his "trick", is the deck to be vanished immediately or is there some misdirection time, back and forth, to another actor before the deck vanishes?), but here's a couple possibilies: If the wizard has the chance, he could switch out a real deck for one that's been rigged to a pull. The switched deck could even be all glued together to insure it goes where it's supposed to go. The wizard could even been holding some confetti in his hand for a nice effect when the deck is tossed. Probably not what you're looking for, but use the Omni Deck and all he has to do is palm off the top card. Voila, the deck has vanished ...sort of. Rick

I think the Topit Method would work well in the situation you mentioned. It has for me.

I imagine that Steve Ehler's suggestion with a piece of flash paper taped to the top of the deck could be a very effective combo.

Hey RJ,
My favorite method to vanish a deck in the course of a trick is Bill Malone's "I only had two." It's based on a Jennings technique and is very strong. Basically, 2 cards are selected and returned. The performer reaches into one pocket and produces the first card, the other pocket and produces the second card. All of a sudden, the deck is gone. No fast movements, no cover, no gaffs. I would qualify this as medium level of difficulty. Some bit of blocking may have to be done, but I urge you to check it out on vol. 4 of his DVDs. Or, pm me. |

This is for stage...
The Harris and other "copping" deck vanishes are all good, but really you just be using a topit for this. The Harris method will be lost when done not-closeup, and other cops aren't going to be as effective. Of course we don't know if the costume will allow it, but the topit would work best imho, especially if you can cover it with a flashcotton/sparkle-additve finger flasher.. |

There are way too many ways to do this.
How about using a servant on the back side of a table/chair/prop etc. Or you could switch the deck out for a metal sh377 and use a big m*gn*t to help the vanish. Also remember it just has to LOOK LIKE a full deck. I'm sure a Tenkai vanish could work in 2 weeks (just use 20 cards). If you think about using a topit, make sure the deck is cased. Also how about a Jumbo deck instead of a regular sized (to be more visible) You could make a Bromley deck vanisher for a Jumbo deck. The only other option (an probably the easiest is black ***. Mail 10% of your fee to me if you use any of these. Joe |

I acted as consultant for The Cherry Orchard for Canada's Stratford Festival several years ago.
Ideas: -When the trick is finished, the cards are put into the card box and then they vanish. The card box is on a pull. - A black art well in a table. The cards are squared after the trick, and they vanish. - The cards are changed visibly into a colorful hat or a card castle. there are dealers' items to accomplish this. - The pack is just dropped into an open pocket as the person turns with that side upstage. They cup their hands and pretend to toss the cards suddenly into the air, and they have vanished. -Use a Devil's Handkerchief. the cards are dropped into a "bag formed by holding the corners of the hanky. Two of the corners are dropped, and the cards are gone. Available through many dealers. - entity

2 TTs down on the Harris vanish, it is so close up. The deck is held tight in the hand. For theater the deck should be held at the fingertips. One of the origanal conditions was to have the deck vanish in a clap of the hands. With attention management a topit could fit the bill, but really the pull seems to be perfect.
