In your opinion what are the most disturbing bizzare tricks. (I have a few friends who think magic is rubbish unless it's spooky!) So a few routines would be great.
My most disturbing is my own routine featuring a moving glass and a circle of tarot cards and that age old friend of bizzarists, DEATH Thanks Florian |

One of the strongest effects that I have used is from Michael Sibbernsen's: Enigmas--Knowledge From Fire. I have used it numerous times in my seances, to "set the mood," and there has always been a dead silence resulting. A true compliment to it's effectiveness.
Take care |

"The most disturbing bizarre tricks" are those bizarre effects performed by conventional magicians. These are truly disturbing.
Also disturbing is any reference to such effects as "tricks." |

How about this presentation to have a real disturbing bizzare effect:
1. Read out some parts of John S. Marr`s "Wormwood". If you know the book, you will know the right parts. 2. Perform the "CupOodles" routine. Use an earthworm instead of the ring and maybe a yogurt cup instead of the noodle cup. 3. Now comes the disturbing part - explain how the trick works. I guess a lot of poeple in the audience will start to buy only canned products in the future.
It is not enough to be without thoughts,
one should also be unable to express them. |

Depends what your definition of disturbing is.
And where do you want to go with your audience? On a visceral level: pulling a worm from your food or your ear is fun; ye old crusty, Gypsy Finger on a pull while eating finger foods is tasty. Take a little off the top with a barber's Razor in the Arm ala Andruzzi (same with knives and needles); Needle thru Your Neck ala P., or, for your more intimate performances, a handy pocket trick: Sewing Needle thru Finger. ATTENTION: The Psychic Surgeon General warns encrypted patients: A chicken liver in the hand is worth two in the coop. How about a Fork in Your Eye ala Mac King or Penn & Teller (It's probably older than that. I know, some guy 3000 years ago was doing it with grapes!) Threaded Needles/Razors from Mouth really upsets the dentists in the crowd. (Who does broken-teeth-on-floss-from-mouth anymore? Ahhh, the good old days.) Pencil thru Tongue is great for math teachers! Somehow, I really like the idea of Butter Knife Roulette. Oh ya, check out Werewolf by David Parr in Brain Food. It's really (sc)hairy! My favorites to this day are Voodoo Blister, Finger Chopper and ANY 'REAL' MINDREADING DEMONSTRATION. Now that's disturbing!

There seems to be a problem here distinguishing between "disturbing" and "gross".
Bizarre should touch the audience at a higher emotional level. Not make them want to barf! In that regard, I would suggest my own Tale of the Monkey's Paw, based on the short story by W. W. Jacobs (in my lecture notes, Bizarre Magic) and my yet-to-be-released Curse of the Baskervilles, based on the Arthur Conan Doyle story The Hound of the Baskervilles. |

Hehehe. Effect IS everything. Sorry to effect anyone negatively. I wasn't suggesting you do it all at once...just shades of Halloween still lurking about.

Hey mistic one, you just remended me of how much I hate the word trick. I saw a magician when I was on vacation this summer that refered to everything he did as "a great trick" or "your gona love this trick" it made me want to puke. Sorry everybody I just needed to get that out of my system.

One of the most disturbing effects I have seen done in a small gathering is the prediction of the death of a living individual.

Possibly the most disturbing illusion I ever saw was performed by a friend of mine Alexandre Domonge. He took us to a local church cemetary one afternoon, and said that he had found an old relative in the Public Record Office. Anyway, he took us to the site of this boy who had supposedly died at age 15 in a cave-in of a coal mine. Anyhow, he continued to tell us this 'story' and there was scratching in the earth, as though someone's nails were clawing from underneath the dirt. We could all hear quite clear noises that sounded like scratching on wood. He acted very frightened and we all left. It wasn't til weeks after that he told me it was part of a new effect he'd been working on. He never did let me in on that one, though.

Ah Raising the Dead. It's a neophyte level effect. Now walking on water that takes some time to get right.

Jim Magus' "The Number of the Beast" is certainly disturbing to conservative Christians. It involves the exorcism of the spirit of Aleister Crowley from a tarot deck. The routine appears in "The Arcana of Bizarre Magic" by Magus. (The tarot deck is contained in a hollowed-out bible.)
It inspired my to develop "The Exorcism" which is even more disturbing than the original. (I have not yet published it. Although I performed it at a Weird Weekend several years ago.) I differentiate between disturbing effects (that cause an emotional reaction in the audience) and disgusting effects. I avoid the latter. However, there is a genre of carnival act that specializes in the latter. I would include Blockhead (the nail up the nose) and eating a glass light bulb in this catagory. Blockhead is safe if you know what you are doing. Glass eating is dangerous even if you do know how to do it.

Blockhead, eating glass, penetrating body parts, etc. is bizarre ... but it is not bizarre magick. Weird is not enough.
Bizarre Magick can be disturbing to the emotions. It can also be sentimental, funny or simply mysterious. It's all about atmosphere and story telling. Have you noticed that most of the profuse users of stage blood are too young to know any better? To get an idea of "real" bizarre magick, read Doc Shiels, Tony Andruzzi, Brother Shadow, Eugene Poinc, Eugene Burger and other thinking practioners. Sid

I perform a variation of "Everywhere and Nowhere" (See 'The Art of Magic' by T. Nelson Downs for two good methods) with a tarot deck. I use a patter (throughout the whole routine) based on the Australian Dreamtime. Really seems to hit people, make 'em think.

I'd never do this myself, nor do I encourage others to do it, but a curse and some sheenanigans could turn a spectator's 'water' blue.
It'd certainly disturb me!

Of course, if your interest is in disturbing your "victim," you could try muttering "oops" while performing psychic surgery.

Good one Sid!
Imagine a psychic surgery ring flight or card location... Can you tell I have too much time on my hands? BTW - Needle thru Finger/Hand/Arm etc. can be done with a special needle. PM me for more details.

An effect I do.
I bring a small group out to a graveyard near my house and talk about the peopel who have died there (took a bit of studing but well worth it) I move to an unmarked stone with just a date. Then I have the person take a piece of paper and wrtie a persons name who they lost. I take the paper and do a tear...then using my hand a pick up some of the dirt which before I showed up I added small bits of flash paper and a green coloring crystals you can use in fires...The paper is burnt in a small pan and the bits added to the dirt I picked up before...as the spectator mixes up the dirt and paper I step back and tell them that the one who wrote the message can be the only one there..in the prosses of the steping back I can prepare the arm...the spectator lights the dirt and the green flash is quite amusing to watch..I walk back over and ..long story short do the ashes on arm to show the name...gets a good reaction, I had one girl break down into tears with pure emotion...it pleases me to bring the emotion to people. |
