One option if they get suspicious about the wallet: do it again without the wallet, never touching the card after they write on it. There are ways, for those who will seek them...
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

The original question here is as old as the rocks, - and so is my answer.
I have been doing center tears or peeks for about 40 years. I have never, never ever been questioned about the writing and tearing, - and I probably won't be in the future. The whole thing is a part of a proccess, and if you do your things right, not a single soul will question you. Sven

At the risk of beating the dead horse I wanted to add one more thought to this.
The reason for the question and the ways that different people have answered it is all about motivation. It's a standard joke in theatre: "Like... what's my motivation, man?" Yet motivation is really important in leading people to the right conclusions in mentalism. You should probably have an idea in your head as to how you would accomplish this if it were real. Do you see visions? Do you hear voices? Is there a vibration that you tap into that tells you what to do? I don't think that you need to pick just one. Just as a trained woodworker can use planes and chisels, lathes and routers, saws and rasps; just as we combine our common senses of sight, sound, taste, smell and touch; a person who had tapped into a secret of perception or projection might be able to access different aspects or combine these things in a variety of ways. Exactly what is is you are tapping into is not really important. There are many examples of ideas that people already believe that you can latch onto. (My favorite place to research ideas is Coast To Coast AM on the radio. What wonderful stories!) You might be bitten by a radio-active spider and the next day you could "see." Once you know why this happens you can then adjust the explanation of what they are doing to be motivated. "By writing this you bring it from thought into form... I can only perceive the physical." "By writing this you activate both the left and right sides of your brain which boosts the signal into the mental frequency I can perceive." "We have determined that you are a kinetic thinker, therefore the act of writing this will be the strongest impression you can create... which will be easier for me to read." Writing a few rules to why you can do what you do will help you to motivate nearly anything. When these things are done for a reason, which understood, there will be little need to question them.
"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

Because otherwise I cannot secretly read what you wrote...
No, better not say that and stick with what Geller would say .... do you really think he has been challenged on that aspect?? me I don't think so. the power of being congruent is on your side if you are congruent with what you preach |

Wonderful posts here! Banachek had a wonderful line about "Well, I'm not a mind reader I'm a Thought Reader" I think you could use that as a reason, too. Adding something like "by writing it down it now becomes the one thought that I'm trying to zero in on".
Anyway, I've never really had trouble w/ any part of a CT or peek. But you know there have been a couple times when I was using the Thought Transmitter and the girls I was using it on almost didn't want to hand me the wallet back. It was pretty easy to get it back because the Thought Transmitter has that card w/ all the symbols on it. I just said "well, I need to use that card as a focusing device for you" and they then handed it back to me. Now I'm still waiting for the day when I do a CT or Peek and the person doesn't want to hand the billet back to me. I have a couple ideas of how to handle this situation but I'd like to know if anyone here has ideas as well and would be willing to share them?

Tell them when they write it down it means they cant cheat etc if you doing stigmata and then they think of another person to ruin the trick. And it helps them visualise whatever they wrote better when its on a peice of blank paper.

I take on a more tree hugger approach to this. I tell them that at one time a tree was a living thing on this earth, and since paper is made from a dead tree I can find the energy from your words/drawings on paper because it was once living and now dead. Your energy is alive so there is a separation.
As for the wallet, I only use my wallet and I use it often, when I don’t have an envelope to get a peek with. So may I suggest, there are a lot of DVDs on how to construct a gimmick envelope find one and construct yourself one. Same thing goes with this, I have been asked why not just turn it over. I go back to my idea of sealing the energy in.
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

I have to agree with those that have put forward the argument that it is all in the way you present the effect. I use my SAW all the time and the placing of a card into my wallet has never been questioned.
If you are not presenting the effect as a trick they should not really care that you place the card in the wallet. After the card has been placed into the wallet I would recommend that the wallet is left on a table or in full sight the entire time; don't just peek and put the wallet away. Dr.J

Hi Jon,
I do like that explanation and have often thought that if I were ever questioned I would use such a phrase. But seriously, if you play it correctly there is no need to have an excuse. Do not excuse yourself, do not feel guilty, do not pass go, sorry I got carried away. Dr.J

There is an excellent discussion in Steve Cohen's "Win the Crowd" that I believe is relevant to this discussion. Basically, he says that if you give any reason to someone for what they are doing before they do it, they are psychologically likely to accept it, regardless of whether it makes any sense. So, for instance, "sit there because you need to sit there" is far less likely to invoke any questions than simply "sit there." The example he gives about writing things down is to simply say "write this down because it is important." This can be extended to why you are placing the card into the wallet (because it is "important," which, of course, it is).
I have been using this ever since I read about it in Mr. Cohen's book and it seems to work wonders. By simply placing a "because" phrase into the command (and appearing confident), it appears to negate any need for further information. You have given them a reason, however ambiguous. This will satisfy that part of their mind that intuitively needs to know "why." I also agree with the above post that discusses motivations and routining. If you have constructed your routine in such a way that the motivation would be apparent, or at least suggested, such as by focusing on the fact that you can't read minds, but use other cues and information (true but strategically vague), then you are far less likely to run into any questioning about why you are asking for the information to be written down. If you break out the Outlaw wallet before even getting your spectator's name, expect more of an interrogation. |
