Hi People,
It has been said that Mark Wilson's book Complete Course in Magic is a must for all magicians. Searching for it, I came a across another title also by Mark Wilson: Cyclopedia of Magic: A Complete Course. The cover seemed very similar and the contents too. The former seems to be newer and also has about 100 pages less. I was wondering which one is "better", or whether is the same book that edited with a different name. Could anyboy clarify the issue for me? I posted something about this in a different forum but nobody has answered my question. I figure that this title would get the attention of those that know a lot about these books. Also, does Mark Wilson hav a book "Encyclopedia of Card Magic"? Thanks, QH. |

The "Cyclopedia" is the same as the "Complete Course" but It has a few sections left out. In other words, you want "The Complete Course".
Their is a book called "Encyclopedia of Card Tricks" but it is not written by Mark Wilson, however it is a very good book that sells in paperback for,I think less that $15. Mark Wilson does have a book called something like "Little Book of Card Tricks" or something like that. It is physically a very, very, small book and problaby doesn't contain anymore than the "Complete Course". |

If you want the latest version you want the paperback version of the Complete Course in Magic. There is still a hardback version floating around sold by many dealers and on e-bay that lacks the newer last chapter. The Encyclopedia is basically just a compact print edition of the hardback. You can get it directly from Mark and even personally autographed to you by Mark and Nani from his website http://www.markwilsonmagic.com or from a lot of magic dealers without the autograph. If you want it autographed and you order it from his website, just put a note in the comments section of the order that you would like it autographed and to whom.

It has a LOT left out. It was designed to be sold at the register in tourist shops, etc. I would stay away. Best,

Quote: The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks is written by Jean Hugard and it is a great book. But, IMHO it is geared towards accomplished cardicians although the beginner can find some gems in this classical tome.

Thanks to all for the marvelous advice. I just received the Complete Course in Magic and I have started to read it. One thing that surprised me is that the is no mention of how to break cards in or the use of aids to do flourishes. This is probably because I have not read it all. I remember when I was a kid that I wanted to do fancy fans and was unable to, until I was asked to try my father's friends deck which had been helped a bit and the fans looked great. I wonder where I should look for that missing piece of info.
Thanks, QH. |
