I don't know the proper name for the effect but it goes something like this...
The mentalist has a sharp knife standing point up on a table. The spectator covers the knife with a paper bag on 1 of 4 positions. (while the mentalist looks away) 3 more paper bags are placed on the table as "dummies" Then the mentalist smashes the 3 "empty" bags with his bare hand (apparently risking his hand) What is this effect called? And who makes it? What is the best version? Any help would be appreciated.

res0g47o,
As far as I know, that's a signature piece of Gary Kurtz. He has performed on national TV and I don't think he's released it to the magic community (though I could be wrong on this). Go to http://www.garykurtz.com/ and check his photos (in the "shows" section) to see an image of this. My advice is if it is a signature piece to avoid it. Alternately, you could ask him if he's published or marketed it. As far as I know, he's a nice guy and would appreciate the email. -Dave Cross

Thank you for the comment. I know Gary performs the effect, but there are a few similar marketed effects, I've seen them in the magazines.

IF this effect "belongs" to Gary and others have ripped it off, why would one purchase something similar and encourage further knockoffs/ripoffs?
Better to NEVER buy anything from such a creator or dealer who sells things like that. That said, I realize there are different methods of accomplishing this effect. But that notwithstanding, why would someone want to perform an effect associated with someone else? |

I'm sure the effect was not created by him. It has been around longer than he has.

Hi friends,
The effect was first published in Bascom Jones "MAGICK" and I am not sure, that Gary was the inventor. I will browse through my volumes of this magazine and I will tell you later, who´s creation it was. Any questions? Feel free to ask!

Please have a look at the "Russian Roulette" thread.
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=15 While it dealt mainly with gun-type routines, Banachek offers some details on the origin of the knife-type roulette. -Mahlstom |

Hocus Pocus magic sells a similar effect called "Fruit Salad." I believe that it is made by El Duco.

Marc Salem performed it in his recent show (MindGames) in New York. Very nice effect.

I have seen this effect marketed by two different companies both of which escape me at this moment. One company sells the electronic version and the other is mechanical and supposedly can be done surrounded.
If I can think of the name I will post it. |

Just an idea, what about using one of those ticket stickers at the restraunts instead. You could also prove the danger by using something to impale on the knife or such.

In many ways this is just another version of Bank Night with all the possible routining variations...Why not have a line of spectators slap their hands down on bags to find a prize and leave you with the knife in your hand? Just a thought?

OR... how about you impale yourself on the knife, blood dripping everywhere, and you're rushed off by paramedics to the nearest hospital? The fallout in terms of newspaer reports and free PR would be awesome.
Oh, COME ON, what's a little bit of pain compared with all that exposure in the media? |

Hi Mx Joker:
Your idea with the ticket sticker is the original version you`ll find in "MAgick"

This is definitely a marketed effect. I've seen it performed twice, once by Marc Salem and once by the guy who runs the Squished Eyeball Theatre in San Francisco.
