I just received by Spellbinding Boxes from MagicSmith (good service and excellent shipping time).
Effect : A marked quarter (or similar sized coin) is placed under a hankerchief and the spec holds onto the coin. They actually feel the coin in their fingers. You remove a golden container from your pocket and hand it to the spec's other hand. The hankerchief is removed to reveal that the coin has dissappeared. The spec then opens the box to reveal another nested box, then another and another, and then the marked coin is shown in the final box. The trick itself: The outer dimensions of the nested boxes is about the diameter of an American 50 cent piece. The gimmick is surprizingly small and can be carried in your pocket. The re-set up time is short. A black hankerchief that is needed for this illusion is INCLUDED with the Spellbinding boxes. It cannot be inspected after the presentation, but the specs are intent on the Spellbinding boxes anyway. The boxes, naturally, can be inspected. They are, by the way, very nicely machined and are gold plated. They are very visual as a result. Cons: The instructions - they are sufficient, but no patter suggesions are offered. Slighty pricy, but this is offset by the well-made quality. My opinion: I rate this as a thumbs up. It sells for about 30 dollars. Other nested coin boxes that I have seen are too bulky to carry around, but not the Spellbinding Boxes. If you're into coin magic, this could be a nice addition to your routines. I feel that it is well constucted and will last for many years. |

Thanks for the Review..Can the coin be marked??

Ideally, you would have the spec mark the coin with a marker. This is the coin that is later revealed nested within the smallest of the nested boxes.
A neat idea would be to find some of those small chocolate, golden-foil wrapped candy coins. These could be marked and then handed out to the specs. |

I've seen Spellbinding and I own Viking's Nested Coin box. They are about the same except in quality. Spellbinding looks nicer as it is gold plated whereas Viking's are made of brass. I feel that Viking's are more precise.

The Spellbinding set comes with a gimmicked handkerchief apparently - does the viking set come with one, if not can anyone suggest what to use instead? I'm new to this and wasnt sure if there was a standalone trick handkerchief available as I would prefer brass boxes if possible. Paul |

You can use a rattle box, I use a combination of rattle box (vanish) and a lippincot box (appears) so you can use the spellbinding set insteadt of the L Box.

Note that this is apparently no longer made, so you'd have to find a used set (the thread was started in 2002.)
There's no mention of a handkerchief accessory in the Viking brass boxes ad. http://www.vikingmagic.com/?nd=full&key=284
Like Bonnie Raitt said, "I miss Little Feat more than I miss being 8 years old." Thanks for the concerts + recordings, Lowell, Richie, and Paul!

Steve, not sure which set you are saying is no longer made... Spellbinding boxes is still made and sold at many shops, and I am fairly sure that Viking still makes their set also.
The gaffed hanky is still provided with the spellbinding boxes, though you'd be much better off using something else as the hank is not exactly high quality. Works OK though as long as you manage views of it well. I usually just palm the coin away or use the No-Ring Ring hank from Fabric Manipulation. Jim |

You don't have to use a handkerchief or rattle box, you could even just use the french drop to vanish the marked coin then reproduce it from the nested boxes. The spellbinding boxes is one of my favorite coin effects, easy to do and always gets huge reactions from audience.
