Hi all!
I and my lovely and talented partner are currently working on a version of Andrew Mayne's Voodoo Box for shows this summer, and we have run into a problem... The center back hole. We have not figured out how to do it. 20 of the 21 pointy sticks go in without a hitch, but we can't seem to get the clearance for the center back hole (The one directly in the center of the back of my assistant)without poking the stick in at a ridiculous angle. Personally, I am tempted to just scrap that one, becaulse it is the least visible, but my assistant is adamant...If it can be done, then she is going to do it (Gotta love that moxie!) Any suggestions? And just a note of review on this "Plan"... It is good, get's the method accross pretty well, but the illustrations drawn in for how to position the assistant in the box seem to have very little grounds in reality. If you look at the drawing of how to be in the box, it is completely different from how the person in the photograph is sitting in the box (Which also seems to be the only way to actually sit in the box!) So...If you are just trying this out for the first time, save some frustration and go with the photo, not the drawing (The drawing is good for the path of the umbrellas, but not much else) Any thoughts on how to make that center back hole work? Thanks! Gwyd. |

Use half of an Umbrella or gimmick it to fold/bend.

Not a bad idea, but part of the presentation of this trick is to allow ALL of the props to be handled and inspected. That tends to limit the modification I can do to the skewering objects.
I know that it is possible to do without it...Just can't figure out how. Is ANYONE actually performing this trick? Gwyd. |

Yea, I have done it a few times.
Gwyd, why would you let everything be handled and inspected. That would sloooow down everything. The props are simple in concept and easily recognized. Another idea is to place it on a stand (which I have done) to make the effect easier to see. Use the table to help with the effect Ray |

You only need to open a few to prove they are real. You don't need to open all. As per Andrew's instructions. This would allow for one to be gimmicked. Also, have you contacted Andrew? He's very friendly and would probably love to help. His email is located on his website.

Oh...All are definately not opened...But they are held by an audience member and handed to me (I play off of the awkwardness of a volunteer holding a large stack of umbrellas)
I think I will get ahold of Andrew, figure out exactly why we can't seem to get that last one in. Thanks much for your help! Gwyd. |

Hi to make the back umbrella go in you have to leand right to one side and the umbrella comes through under your right arm. that's how I perform it like that,
Thanks |

Thanks Ricardo...I had pretty much given up on that last one! Will give it a try tonight, then I can go completely surrounded!

Gwyd, I use 2 large umbrellas on top of the box. It is not in the center. It is placed on a diagonal position on top of the box. PM me if you don't understand what I mean.

As a matter of fact...I do!
(All of the advice given really helped! And I loved the two on the top suggested by Lou Hilario) The main difference between Andrew's version and mine is I had to use a wooden box instead of cardboard as it was a period show. Cardboard was not allowed. Otherwise, the dimensions of the box are the same. You will notice that we completely skip the sticks in the back. We can do them, but cut them from she show since we do not perform surrounded. It just took more time to do, and got pretty much the same level of reaction. We performed this in over 40 shows last summer, and it always went very well. Here you go! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTP66ALF8iQ Let me know what you think, or if you have any questions! Gwyd |

Eddie! I must applaud you for searching for topic instead of starting a new one. WTG!
Gwyd is awesome in his witty candor. |
