I've had the Princess Flying Carpet for some time now, but I can't really get excited about it. I thought that might change if someone could point me towards a good performance clip that showcases the effect. Thanks in advance.

There ya go man. It's not a very good video, but it's something I guess. |

Try to avoid the little bounce of the carpet at the end. She should get off as carefully as she got on and he could help by holding the carpet still at that crucial moment. Also, a hula hoop can be used with the illusion to show no strings, etc.
Another move is to pick the "book" up and read an appropriate passage from Arabian Nights from it while holding the book. The performer's body blocks the view. I had a bit that I "read" from the book about a golden apple, and then I produced the "golden apple" from the book to hand to my assistant. Then I produced a six foot silk (tie-dyed multi colored) while talking about the rainbow in the clouds. I pulled the six foot silk over her from the back and then kept on pulling it away to show that she had vanished at the end. That takes a stage, though and is not something you can do at a birthday party.

That video was PAINFUL to watch! As the video clip loaded, the text indicated that the magician and assistant performing this effect use it regularly in their show. With that build up, I was expecting a lot more polished style, confidence and showmanship. Is this as good as the illusion can be, or am I expecting too much?

I agree 100% with Steve on this one but then again don't take my word for it , as I just watched the video and I am now surely stupider for it

I have a great presentation for the carpet. It gets spontaneus applause most of the time. "It's a poor artist who blames his brushes"--Dai Vernon.

I think that the Flying Carpet is a GREAT first illusion. Why? Because not only does it pack flat and transport easily, but it doesn't really DO anything. Because it is not an animated effect that works by itself, it forces the performer to really make something of their presentation.
Ben I would just stick with it and smooth out any wrinkles. It's not a bad presentation by any means, it just needs a little something extra. Perhaps some direction from a good high school theatre teacher? Constructive criticism? I like the idea of lying under the carpet, but enjoy that moment a little longer. Find a way to get in and out of it as smoothly as possible and take the time to let the audience read the fact that she truly is floating just inches above your head. When you pull those swords out, trying taking them out as if you have no idea what may happen. Will she fall? Make every moment count and you'll be doing great!

I don't think that was Ben. It was the demo video from the Daytona Magic web site. Same kid you see demo a lot of their stuff on the site.

Every time I buy an inferior or poorly made magic trick, I expose it to everyone I meet. This would be one I would expose.

Jack Gwynne did alright with it. It's the magician, not the prop. Some present it well and some don't. I've lost track of how many times I've seen the classics of magic butchered.

Alan,
Is that why David Copperfield uses cardboard boxes for his shows? So you are saying that Dominik's origami is the same as Jim Steinmeyer's? I think that the props are very important. This one seems inferior to me for the price. |

BYUDAD, I think you are talking about the opposite of what Alan was getting and that is: you could give the worst magician in the world the best props and he would still only be that. The experience and the level of the performer is what allows quality props to be effective.

NFox,
That's exactly my point. Sure, the carpet in the video is a cheaply made one. It's best to use the best one obtainable. |

Actually, Alan, the Sultan's Flying Carpet that Daytona Magic sells and makes is one of the best I've seen that is not custom made. It is far superior to the Mak Magic version. Materials are better and the workmanship is very good.
The video presentation on Daytona's site doesn't do the illusion any justice. The folding panel is left too open when removed and draws attention to itself. Just performing the illusion straight, as done in the demo, won't get much of a response. There has to be a real presentation. Michael |
