I just noticed on the TVMAGICGUIDE.com website that Lance Burton will be releasing a new special next year called Guerilla Magic...Hitting the Streets. I for one am glad that all the newest specials are close up magic related, even if they are very much the same. Performer walking around showing effects. I would rather see this type of magic than big stage illusions any day. I just hope Burtons charm is replaced with..."Watch", or acting all spooky.

This is very sad. Another magician trying to becoming a Blaine clone. First David, then Chris, now Lance.
A sad, sad day indeed.

No way, dude. I disagree! Turn on the TV and see magic?! That is great
If I landed a TV special I would not turn it down, no way. Who wants to watch those stupid sitcoms anyway?!

Street magic is clearly what is getting magic out to younger audiences. We had Copperfield, Penn and Teller, Siegfried and Roy, Paul Daniels, etc, on tellevision. Not to mention fantastic pecials by Gary Oulette. If David Blaine, and street magic is what get's magic on TV, and out to younger audiences, then I agree with Ellusionist! The more magic on TV the better!!!

There is no such thing as a David Blaine clone, a David Copperfield clone, or any other type of clone. We as magicians and human beings are not clones! Each of us have our own unique qualities and strengths. Personally, I would like to see a special involving all kinds of magic...bizarrist, close up, stage, gospel, escapology, mentalism, and street (I think that's everything). Of course I am more than happy that new shows are being produced, and if it focuses on a strength of that performer so much the better. It raises awareness of our art and may even bring about the next Houdini, Cardini, Michael Ammar, David Blaine, David Copperfield, Jeff McBride, Brett Daniels, insert whatever name you want here.

Just today, a senior in high (who knew I was a magician) asked me if I could bite a piece off of a half dollar like that "Blaine Dude". I could and he thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread. I like that because Blaine puts magic on TV that almost any magician can do, so it makes us look good. Don't you think?
And if Lance wants in on it too, fine! He has the right to do street, illusions, or even gospel if he so pleases. (which by the way would be kinda cool) Justin ps-"Since sliced bread"...what was there before sliced bread?? |

Just because another magician does street magic does not make him a Blaine wannabe. Street Magic did exist before Blaine. Is every magician who does a new stage magic routine a Copperfield clone? No, and I for one would be glad to see big names hit the streets. Be down and dirty with their audience, not in their own world up on stage and see how they handle it. I love stage magic because thats what got me into magic, but the street is where I feel some of the best stuff is done. One bad thing, though. Guerilla magic was one of the names in mind for my T.V special, blast...........

Easy, hackmonkey, it's just a rumor! You could probably still use the name if you wanted to.

If this is true, then I'm all for it as long as Lance projects his own style...which I'm sure he will.

Each magician has their own style and performance methods, no matter how similar in apperance. So that shouldn't be a problem, Vilago.

O.K., let me rephrase that...as long as he doesn't obviously copy Blaine's mannerisms...which I'm sure he won't...

I think it'll be very interesting to see what Burton comes up with. As a showman, I'm sure he'll have a unique and interesting angle and it probably won't be the same ol' stuff.
May your fingers never lose their deftness,
May your tongue always lead them down the garden path... Regards, Whiterabbit |

I read at the AllMagicGuide website that the special will be performed on the "Animal Planet" channel. I don't remember if it gave a viewing date or not.

Don't worry, Stardog...gorillas have come up with very little in the way of original magic. They all tend to ape each other.

I am a big angel fan and I must admit that his special on tv was not comparable to his show in times square. Need I say more?

There is a possible chance of some contact with Lance over the holidays. Will post on it, if it occurs/is permitted. I'm sure if anyone can do a special like this, and present it properly, it will be Lance.
And no there is nothing wrong with watching animal planet.

Animal Planet actually did a special on magicians who use animals (domestic and exotic). It was quite informative and I enjoyed watching it. And the best thing is, if it's on AP it's family level stuff, so anybody can watch without being offended by anything.

I do agree with keeping it on a G rated level. This greatly enhances marketability and furthers the Art.
