And we certainly shouldn't use any kind of knife or chopper trick in kids shows - or they may bring said knives to school to kill other children with. No "hypnotizing" a balloon and skewering it with a needle through the drawn on head. For goodness sake no flaming head chests, or candle through arm! Of course no 3 card monte tricks because kids will try to learn it and be on the streetcorner scamming tourists. Ok, that last one is far fetched, but the rest are right along the same line.
What about the circus? Do kids try to walk a little rope over a canyon afterwards? Do they try stunts on their flaming motorcycles when they get older? Do they try to swing from high trees like a trapeeze? Well...maybe a few do. The idiots. But I believe they'd do it even without the circus. I don't believe that kids will try anything known to be dangerous just because they see it, any more than I believe they will take up witchcraft from seeing a magician. Everyone, and I mean Everyone, grows up from learning to make decisions for themselves. The division of Fantasy and Reality is something that every child has had to learn ever since the first story was told. If we really want to feel like we are a crucial morality-teaching force for kids (which we aren't and shouldn't be - we're entertainers, remember?) maybe we should try teaching them responsibility and self-control. I do appreciate the concerns for what could happen due to litigation if someone decides to try to connect you to a horrific incident. Just like parents have blamed Dungeons & Dragons, MTV, and Rock and Roll in the past for influencing their kids to do incredibly stupid things. It is a real concern, and an unfortunate one. It is absolutely horrid to have kids try to amass weapons to kill their friends. But somehow I doubt that they were driven to it by an entertainer, especially a western magician. They are clearly more troubled than that.

The problem is, what you, or anyone else here thinks is not the issue....
What the people paying you think is. I can not speak to private shows, I don't do them. I can speak to public schools, those I have done for over 30 years. In the public schools, you had best leave the guns at home....... |

I would never bring gun props to any school. As I said in an earlier post, it all depends on the location and clients as to what is acceptable. If the school decided to hire a cowboy magician though, one would guess that they have the typical icons in mind, and would not mind discussing something like large comedy foam guns or the like (not that that would be my style anyway).
But public shows may be the easiest to have gun props at with little concern. I have seen strolling western themed magicians at events with real or realistic guns, and did not see any parents there expressing concern. And since they were big events, if the parents didn't like it, there were plenty of other things to entertain them. I really will use caution in pursuing this. I have been asked to do magic at Rodeos, where guns are almost mandatory (they sell kids realistic cap guns and holsters at most rodeos). But a private birthday party may be a different story. And again, it will depend on the client. I also offer a formal tux show if the parents don't want the cowboy at all.

One other thought....
....make sure any "security" at the event knows you and your equipment. THAT could be a bad thing too. |
