Thimbles are readily available from most stores, they make sense because humans have fingers and thimbles are made to fit on fingers. If you personally can find something else that suits you, them by all means use it.

Thimbles are just the standard to start with, not the law to use, but it does sound like you don't do thimbles or manipulation magic.
