A couple of months ago I found out there's this guy who teaches magic lessons at some elementary schools here in Montreal who "teaches" (exposes) the linking rings, as well as who knows what else. When I found out he was showing the kids how the rings work, I called him and told him that first of all he's exposing the effect, and secondly, after the kids learn it in class they'll have no opportunity to do it afterwards unless they buy their own rings, plus the fact that when one teaches magic at after-school activities you should teach simple tricks with ordinary objects that the kids can get their hands on, like paper, cards, coins, string, etc, and not expose any of the more professional effects. Anyway, he seemed to understand what I was saying. Then, a couple of months later, I heard that he was now 'teaching' the kids the change bag!
Any suggestions on how to handle this, short of doing a real sword-thru-his-neck-routine? I'm really angry at this guy.

Perhaps material like the afgan bands would be more useful.

There is a company call Mad Science (head offices in Quebec somewhere) that deals with teaching science in a fun manner. I worked for them for about 3 months. I found out they have a section call the science of magic.
One of the tricks they expose is the Stiff Rope trick. They show the inside workings and stuff. They showed a few others, most I think were insignificant and stuff they could do at home. Oh yeah, they also exposed the thumbe tip. I complained to them, stating that, this is stuff (the tip and rope) that they wouldn't be able to do at home. They wouldn't listen. Even in some of their shows they say magic if fake and not real (which is true) but some seem to do it in a "put-down" type of manner. What do you guys think? |

I think they should be boiled in oil. Tell them you are going to expose their inner secrets. ARgh... I gotta calm down after reading some accusations. And maybe it's because the Lakers lost last night???

I have an idea, but I can't even type it in here, because if I did, I would be a target of Homeland Security.

Now he's exposing The Tricky Bottles. Enough! I'm going to call him, set up a meeting with him. Explain to him that many local magicians who are not as diplomatic as I am are intent to do him damage (which is partly true). So I play the 'good cop'. I will even offer him a proper beginner's magic course outline. Of course, if he refuses, than I let the rabbits out. Boiling oil? Publicdata? Afghan Tali-bands? Hopefully it won't come to that.
I have the unfortunate dishonour of living in the same city where Mad Science began: Montreal. I give a big Blech! to Mad Science for franchising entertainment.

It sounds like he likes to expose methods to little kids. I think that is wrong, I guess out of all magicians there are a few that don’t follow the ethics of magic.

Todsky, there's a thread about your fellow Canadian, Jay Sankey, doing a show on TV where he teaches (and exposes) magic to kids.

Todsky,
Here it is. Hope I did this right. I'm not very computer savvy. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......7&22 Ray |

Thanks Ray. Interesting thread! But it sounds like Sankey's only going to be teaching beginner stuff. I doubt he'd expose the Rings, or even the Change bag, for that matter.

Teaching kids tricks that they can't perform once they get home for their families is an awesome way to make them lose interest in the subject... that guy needs a couple of slaps...
