I just received my ABC Gumball Recombobulator from Wolf Magic, and it certainly meets the same high standards of workmanship and visual appeal I have come to expect from them. I do have a question for those who use this effect. Do you have any tips for dealing with lighting issues, angles, where and how close children sit, etc? I have also posted this in "Secret Sessions" if your answer requires that level of specificity.
Thanks-- Flimnar

Flimnar,
Congratulations as you have first class prop and routine. I have performed this pretty close to the audience under various lighting without any difficulty. I believe the kids are so into the story and routine that they're not looking for that detail. The only question I've had is to replace the plastic balls with real gumballs as others have described here on the Café? The kids all want to know what you're going to do with the gum and are anxious for some samples. I presently don't distribute any .... how do some of you handle that? Thanks, Dan. |

I just ordered a box of the 2" gumballs myself. I know in earlier threads others said they bought smaller gum at Costco or Sam's Club then modified the prop with plexiglass. Handing out the gum could be a problem for the host, but I imagine the kids expect it. I was wondering about handing it over to the host/hostess to distribute as the kids leave. Are the 2" gumballs dangerous (choking)?Hmmmm........

Flimnar,
where did you find a box of 2" gumballs? Have been thinking of modifying my ABC Gumball machine with the plexiglass because I haven't had any success in finding larger gumballs...thanks for any help you can give me with this. Smartini |

Smartini--
I used a web address that Harry Murphy suggested in an earlier thread: http://www.gumballs.com/mouthfull.html This takes you to the 2" gumballs. I may still try the plexiglass, but this seemed easier for a first try. I know you are a big fan of all things Wolf Magic. How do you handle lighting, angles, where children sit with the ABC Gumball prop? Has your experience been the same as Dan's? Am I just worrying too much? Thanks-- Flimnar

There's really NO WAY to present this incorrectly. I have one of the very first Chance ever produced, as well as just about everything he's ever made. You're headed in the right direction. I used the ABC in an entire library tour last year, and it never failed to get great response!

Steve,
what was your library presentation like?...I used mine as something I borrowed from my friend Willy Wonka and made connections from the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book...remember the inventing room...throw in some Oompa Loompas, some music, dress up the child helper as Charlie and you've got yourself some magic fun! As for angles/lighting...I've never had any trouble...play with the load chamber and you'll see that you don't want them too close particularly if you have them sitting on the floor...enjoy your new prop! Last year, quite a bit of my show was "things I've invented after reading about inventors"...and, around here, I'd never dress the kid as anything. Too close proximity to the child, and things could get weird. I have a few of the costume bags, and have never gotten to use any of 'em..that's too bad, too. Aside from a handshake, I pretty much never touch the child...I do use the Super Chicken, but he puts on all the costume, and it's not bad, since I wear the same things. Lots of library shows have the kids coming with their friends, and they'd be ridiculed later for any fun I had at their expense. Any "fun poking" has to be directed at me. Don't know if that's how Canada is...but that's how it is here in the OLD South. I had an entire daycare group leave the library a few years ago when some kid (about 12, and should know better) stand up and start shouting during the show. When I asked him to take two steps back...and another two..and another... hoping he'd end up outside the room...the lady in charge of the group (they were only about 15 of the whole group of 300 at the show) got the kids and left. Later complained to the library that to "have his fun" the boy should've been allowed to do whatever he wanted during the show...after all, he's "just a child"...
I haven't been back to that library. This was even during the ABC routine! Steve |

Steve,
any costumes would have to be the right child and in the right way...I always ask them "May I place this hat on you?" and so on...for the ABC I use Wonka gear (glasses/hat)if I've picked the wrong child or if they sudden start to feel uncomfortable then that's the way it goes...my style is the same as yours...poke the fun at yourself..that's pretty much the standard if you want to get rebooked. This is about light proof as they come.
I use the Super Bubble gum with a wrapper on it. I always worry about the sanitary issues of no wrapper. The kids are always excited about getting a peice of gum after the show, and have yet to ask how the wrappers got on the gum, even though I did not put any in the machine. This and the Weasel absolutley raock every show I do. This is top notch stuff. Thanks Chance. The other nice thing about the ABC, is you get an easy 5 minutes out of it, more if you want. |

A routine/handling with the ABC that I like is that you start to give out the fake gumballs and then stop telling the kids that they should never eat unwrapped candy...I use it as an opportunity to squeeze in a Halloween safety message and give the wrapped candy to the parents.

Hey all I don't use or own this prop but do sometimes produce candy from a dove pan etc.
check this out gumball.com if you can't find your gumballs here your in trouble they have 2".........and they will custom imprint them ont eh gumball itself or on the wrapper! little expensive but may be worth it!

Steve,
I have a chef's costume bag which I use for a chick pan routine. This has always been well received and one of the highlights of my show. Dan. |

Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

Hi guys, I'm a newbie so be gentle with me! thinking about buying the abc machine but for any of you guys who own one, I have this question: would the prop be big enough to hold a average sized rabbit?. I am thinking of a routine where I call it the Awesome Bunny Creator(any suggestions on a better name would be great!) and instead of it being a pallette of chewed gumballs it would be giant boogers(this is for my older kids shows) anyway I would do the routine as wolf suggests putting in the boogers maybe throwing I other nasty things, rubber spiders, bugs etc turning the handle then lift tube and hay presto a real live bunny!. Routine is in it's infant stage but I like it, just hopeing the prop is big enough! any suggestions or tips on this or the routine would be great.

You'd have to reconfigure (or recombobulate...) the whole prop. The thing that holds the final load in would be useless and have to be removed, there's another part of the item that would have to go, too.

Trixsntracks,
I would recommend you get Wolf's Funhouse is you are going to use a live animal. If you were to buy both you could certainly link them together. I am sure if you ordered both at the same time Chance would possibly be able to make them the same colour combination. But I really wouldn't use the ABC to produce a rabbit you would probably end up with animal rights on your case!? Cheers Marcus |

Hi guys, thanks for the info steve & mjeayers, back to the drawing board then! I have considered the funhouse but thought abc would be funkier for the older kids shows but if it's not suitable the last thing I want is to harm my adorable bunny. any suggestions on any other rabbit props that could go with the routine I outlined?

I use both of these props and I can promise you that either is a great choice. I use real bubblegum in my ABC and this has changed the entire routine for me. It was good with plastic balls, but is over the top with real gum! The kids that have seen my show before ask for this routine by name. I use the 3/4 inch (I think) balls from Sams Club. You can get 850 balls for about $16. I don't use wrappers and in 2 years have had no complaints. Not saying it can't happen, just hasn't yet. I don't think a rabbit would work well for this prop though.
The funhouse would be a great rabbit prop though, I produce 2 doves in it or a bunch of stuff plushies, sometimes a bunch of tiny balloon dogs. It's a very good and versatile prop. Oh yeah, back on target to the original question. I have NEVER had any problems with lighting and the ABC or Funhouse. Frankly, people are looking at the tube that you take out, not the "empty" box. I have used it for over almost 4 years without ever getting busted. Either way, you'll be in good hands. Chance's props rock! I have a ton of them. Keith

As Keith said, you really can't go wrong with any of Chance's props. They're great to look at and are built to last. Add a routine and you've got a winner.
