I've got three things I'd like to accomplish:
1.) A rose in a vase stands on the table. After about 4,5 minutes it starts to get old, roots and dies. (Sorry, don't know the english word ) Possible Solution: Some chemical in the water, that starts the process. Somebody tried something similar to this? 2.) A long candle is lit at the beginning. After about 6,7 minutes, its burned down. Possible Solutions: The candle is hollow and has very thin walls. The downside to this is that maybe it burns down sideways. Second Solution: A hole in the table and the candleholder and the candle somehow sinks through. 3.) I want to get old through the show. So far I had two ideas. At some point I secretly attach a gray mustard to my face. And I put on some old glasses. After the show I move much slower, my hand are even a bit shaking. As I stand up, I use a silk to dry my forehead, produce a walking stick (cane) and walk awaw. All that will be used in a controlled close Up setting. Anybody tried something like this? Any help is much apreciated! thanks

You might want to tie in the "Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde with this. http://tinyurl.com/cx77g
Some quick make-up you can use to "age" your hands is any kind of dark powder you can quickly rub on the backs of your hands as they are concealed behind some object. You make shadow "stripes" by running the make-up from your wrist to between the knuckles of each finger. This can be done very quickly and will add to the over all effect of aging much more than just changing the face alone. A "Wrinkle maker gimmick" for your forehead would be to tape three mascara pencils together and then, behind the silk as you wipe your forehead, draw the gimmick across to make three (or more) wrinkle lines. Don't make them heavy- just light ones for the impression of wrinkles. OK, now that I've told you how to make yourself look old, what tips do you have to make me look about thirty years younger?

Jim,
Thanks for all the tips. I read dorian Gray a while ago. That seems to be a very nice idea. Maybe have a photo of me, on a stand, that grows younger as I grow older! Whenever I want to feel younger I watch the old episodes of monty python! to laugh makes you look younger! I know its not much...

Mogwai: Thanks for the tip.
I remembered a thing about the rose from "Beauty and the Beast." If you have a glass cover for the rose, you can use the "Pepper's Ghost" to have it change from a live rose to a dead withered rose whenever you want. It could also be sort of a mirror glass covering to effect the change.

Sorry, but what is a Pepper's Ghost?

Pepper's Ghost: http://tinyurl.com/cgwen I think Jim Gerrish is thinking of a miniaturized version of this, such as the one used in the Ghost Box (Wizards' Journal #4).

Mogwai,
Here's one idea for growing old. It has been used on stage for many years to do live changes from Dr. Jekyl to Mr. Hyde, etc. Prior to your performance, use red makeup to draw wrinkles on your face and hands. Under red light this will be invisible. Crossfade the light from red to green, and the wrinkles will appear. As long as the light source is not directly visible to your audience and you have other interesting things going on, people generally won't notice the change in color. Doug |

Mogwai,
Here's an idea I just came up with for the rotting rose. I have no idea if it will work. Make a rose with a stem made from some sort of a decorated flexible tube and a dark red paper blossom on top. Use a bulb or a small toy pump to force water up the tube. Or, perhaps the tube could just be packed with cotton, and will naturally draw up water when the bottom is wetted. When the moisture reaches the top the blossom will get wet, darken and wilt. Leaves could be attached through holes in the tube; they would also get wet and wilt. A couple petals and a leaf held on with a dab of paste would fall off when wetted. A piece of piano wire connected at the top of the tube and running down inside it could be pulled to make the whole rose slowly bend over. Let me know if you try this and it works! Doug |

that's a great Idea. I'm gonna think about. When timed correctly, it could work perfect. The thing with the make-up is also very nice. I'll try this out! Thanks a lot! What I also thought was: I wear a hat through the show. There's a grey wig hidden inside, with the hair pointing upwarts. At the end when you bow, take the hat off, and the hair falls down. Don't know how this is gonna look.
