"Do as one does," how very proper!
HRH. I'm bad with acronyms. Can you give a hint? |

Ray;
FYI - I use no CNC or computer involvement in the creation of my cups. Everything is done the low tech hand method from making the initial sketches to machining the steel spinning chucks to the actual spinning. In the past few months I've returned to using drag tools for all of the spinning - deciding not to use the slightly faster roller tools (both are hand tools; but the drag tools better produce what I am aiming for). I feel that I have better control over the end product if everything is done by hand. It is certainly much easier to fine tune a spinning chuck's shape by hand right on the spinning lathe between making a few prototype cups. You are correct that quality cups will not always be available. This has been indicated on my web site. I am currently phasing out several of my cup models and we (the marketplace) have already lost designs from other makers. These things are just too labor intensive (expensive) to inventory. As a matter of fact, they are too labor intensive to make period. Considering the risks involved in making cups and the labor involved, I'd say that good cups are too cheap. But then, I'm the guy who gets his hands dirty and fully knows what is involved in making nicer cups. As you say, they will not always be available from any maker. I know I tire of making them and cease production on certain items over night. Payne; Your friend with his flywheel lathe will not be able to spin heavy cups on his machine. I can easily stop a 1/2 hp lathe with spinning and do all of my cups on a 3 hp lathe. It takes lots of power to spin - and a heavy, rigid lathe. BTW - I'll be spinning a limited number of set of my Traditionals sometime in May. Hint, hint. Andrew; Your "begging" is becoming embarrassing. Email me (not PM) and we will discuss it. I might do them for you with the other Traditionals in May. There are options in the chop cup to discuss that do not need to be made public here. This will be a "special case" and not a commonly available item. I do not feel most magicians are able to correctly utilize a combo set and only make them now and then for special performers. Jim |

Few people know this business as well as Jim Riser.
I agree with him about the combo set. It's a special case. It requires a special performer, and above all, taste.

Bill, thanks.
Jim, thanks for the info about how you make your cups. It was a bit presumptuous of me to assume you use computers. But I was certainly correct when I said your cups are truly works of art. A great performance of the cups and balls using a combo set is Michael Vincent's. He uses a Sherwood brass set I believe. |

So glad to hear this news. I am off to Italy for a week on vacation and will drop you an email from the hotel (if they have internet) or next week on my return. Many thanks Andrew
