I think...and I'm hoping...that Psychic at large is done. It hasn't been on in it's regular time slot here in Florida. I HATED the show!

Sponsors of shows may be contacted and displeasure with her appearances expressed. Perhaps writing to her via her e-mail would also help express disdain for her "work." --Ellen Elpy

It sounds like this has been attempted in the past. The Montel show does have a call in line which is not open to canadian's calling from a canadian land line -- so that puts me out of the running. I think that we should try and take down this juggernaut of psychic fraudulence! ( Not sure if that is a word ) Maybe Pen and Teller need to get involved!

Doesn't she still do reading s for anyone...its about $600 or something.
To me if someone wants to expose her, get the cash, secretly film it , then confront here after the event with a visable cam and ask her to answer questions. The main problem when people try to expose others is that the exposers carry little credit by their own actions, I saw a skectic on Pyschic at large, even thought he brought the right points out, his presentation and persona was without credit, he appeared almost bitter?! She does do readings for around $750.00, but they are by phone, so "trapping" her on hidden cams wouldn't work. |

Anyone that would tell a man that his departed mother was unfaithful, and that his father is unknown to him ON NATIONAL TV deserves to be humiliated in public.
I don't watch much TV, and certainly not much daytime TV, but recently I was home on a holiday and caught a few minutes of Montel with "the Mentalizer" sharing the stage with this woman. He did a sloppy PK touches and some goofy spoonbending and Brown (didn't know who she was until the commercial break) was validating him, not as an entertainer or thaumaturge, but as evidence of "the supernatural." I know that those one here that are calling for her arrest are speaking from the gut because they know, sadly, that there's no way to make that happen. But here's something to consider: IBM and SAM are large organizations. They may not have lobbying juice but they do have the membership capacity to substantiate a press conference. In reaction to Brown's recent lies about the miners, etc., IBM / SAM might issue a press release condemning her and making a debunking case against her flimflam. That kind of controversy could draw enough media momentum to bring Montel and an intelligent person on the same talk show... Now, one could say "why give her the publicity, no one is paying attention anyway.." but I'm not so sure that's true. We know Brown is a fake, and we could prove it (or at least provide the evidence) if given the forum access to her or to her supporters. Someone could "pie" her... "Hey psychic, didja see that coming?" The one and only time I called Art Bell (and second time and last time listening) I told him the story about going to a "psychic booth" and asking where the bathroom was. She didn't know. So then I asked her if I should get married to the girl I was currently dating. She said yes. (I wasn't dating anyone at that time.) Bell of course didn't take that to mean "psychics" are most often phonies. To them that believe, no explanation is necessary, because evidence will be ignored anyway. To those that believe, I ask: sure, maybe there is a sixth sense, but why should I believe anyone that claims to have it without testing them? And if they fail the test, why should I be sensitive about their feelings? Again: maybe there are psychic powers. But it also may be true that only 5 or 6 people on earth have them, and nobody knows their names. I see no reason to give credulity to anyone who arrogates to themselves such oracular "powers." It's like Derren Brown proved in his Messiah show: tragically, people don't even ask the obvious question: is this a trick? They don't want to be in the confrontation of calling a fraud a fraud. Frank Abagnale in "Catch Me if you Can" wrote about how people believe what you tell them. They don't want to elevate their heart rates and blood pressure by directly calling someone a liar.

Any members from IBM or SAM think this is doable?
I am being serious here, this needs to stop....

I don't care for her but I think this effort would cause more harm than good in the end. When the Magic Comunity tried to "OUT" the Piddingtons it backfired. This might be similar. If they didn't "Burn" her on the miners fiasco, they won't on anything else either.

Don't you see the contradiciton in that statement? 'Proving' Brown is a fake, but knowing that it won't change beliefs. Just preaching to the choir. |

Let's just say my belief about what they will ignore is a presupposition. It's logical to believe that evidence persuades, and pessimistic to believe it won't. So my pessimism could prove wrong... so yes I was inconsistent, writing off the cuff.

It's very hard to prove a negative; that Browne isn't psychic. Many of us believe her to be a fraud, but I don't know how to get through to those that believe in her paranormal abilities. Many still believe that Geller has supernatural powers, even after much public debunking. People believe what they want to believe. That said, it saddens me to see Browne profiting from what she does. I'm also frustrated that criminals like Kevin Trudeau are raking cash in hand over fist. Unfortunately it's all too common that people who need real help get fleeced by fake psychics, or buy bogus cures, etc. Have you tried the JREF Forums for ideas on debunking Browne? To those Café members who believe in psychic powers; do you think she's a fraud? If so, how do you know? |

She has to live on the Montel set. Every single time I see Montel, there she is. I haven't heard her on Coast to Coast since the coal miner incident. I sense there are Sylvia followers here on the Café so I will say no more for now.

Have you tried the JREF Forums for ideas on debunking Browne? Personally, I think Browne actually believes she is getting messages from the other side (whether she is, or just needs medication is up for debate). If that's the case, would you still call someone a fraud/criminal for having a belief you don't agree with? |

If that's the case, would you still call someone a fraud/criminal for having a belief you don't agree with? I've never called anyone a fraud simply for having beliefs different from my own. That would be crazy. I don't care what Browne believes. But when anyone charges money for a service, in my opinion they have an obligation to deliver those services. If Browne can really talk to the dead or whatever she claims, then I have no problem. If she is claiming powers that she does not actually have, and charging money for this--in my view that's fraud, whether she truly believes to have these powers or not. Let's say I have good intentions, and truly believe that when I wave my hands over someone's head I cure them of curses. So I charge money for this, but in reality the hand waving accomplishes nothing. This is still fraud in my opinion, even though I believe in what I do. Most if not all of us need real help sometimes. I don't believe Browne is offering real help. Jim, do you believe Browne truly has supernatural powers? If she doesn't, isn't it fraud to charge money for nonexistent powers? Here is an interesting thread that covers this topic: Is there a valid moral objection to psychic readings? |

I just don't care for the contemptuous attitude that, "We must do something about this!!!" As Slim King points out, such tactics only hurt the art. Thankfully, I think the tide has been changing in recent years and many magicians are just letting it go. |
