I bought some 8" & 9" quik-crete tubes at lowes which I plan on making in to a squared circle. I am going to use this at birthday parties and other kid's shows at schools, etc.. I plan on using velvet (or NuVel if I can find a source) for the BA. I also know that it is best to use something bright and flashy for the tube and box to distract the eye from the BA, and I was also planning on putting plexiglass over the box window to aid with the BA. I want to leave a little room for demonstrating the box is "empty" with my hand, and I know that it is best to put the BA gimmick at least 3 to 4 inches back from the front window to avoid detection. Keeping all of that in mind, what do you think would be a good size for the outer box and also for the window? how much of a frame should I leave around the window? How much shorter should I make the BA tube than the outher tube and box? Also aside from making a glued sturdy outer box from wood what would be a good lighhtweight outer box? should the box have handle grips or cutouts on the sides to hold/lift it with? Any suggestions for colors for the tube box? I would prefer something that would fold flat, but can work with a sturdy box, since it can also be used to transport props.
I know it isn't rocket science, but I was hoping that someone else here who has already gone through the process would be able to offer some good tips or rules of thumb or suggestions for overall size of the prop.

You do not fully understand black art. It is the bright bars against the interior that make the illusion. So, my advice is don't use plexi to cover the opening and it does not have to be 3" or 4" back from the outer box.
You can get decorative aluminum sheets from the hardward store that can replace the opening bars on the box. Make a cardbard mock-up 1st with the tube you have and adjust from there. I cannot tell you anything about choice, because my likes are different from yours. 1st I would just buy a new Square Circle trick, if I had no new ideas to add to the standard version. Have Fun! |

Thanks for the answer. I appreciate your input about the chrome bars and cardboard mock-up idea for the angles. I will look in to adding something in front besides plexi, even if it is a mesh screen. I have had 2 squared circles that I have purchased over the years - one had a clear plexiglass window and one had the chrome bars. My reasoning for having the BA gimmick a few inches back is to be able to casually further demonstrate the box as empty when the tube is out by placing my hand in front of the BA gimmick and the opening in the box. This is how one of my store-bought squared circles was setup before, and I preferred that setup - you get a little less load space, but it is more convincing, IMO. I don't feel a need to pay a lot of money for something AGAIN, that I can easily build myself for a fraction of the price.

I never show the box to be empty by putting my hand in it or whatever. By pulling out the tube and showing it empty should be more than enough. In the past I would try to show more magic than needed with a certain effect. I beleive that showing the tube empty and the box empty is all that is needed. I mean I lift the tube and replace it then lift the box and replace it. More than enough magic there. And I agree about the build it yourself when you can. A square circle is a very easy build. It just depends on how much you want to produce. I am building 2 of them right now and I keep saying I am goin gto post the pics here, I guess I will do it some day. And make that cardboard mock up first. Believe me it does help. Good luck and let us know how you are doing with it.
Thanks Steven |

You are probably right - less is more - no need to oversell. I would love to see the pics when you are done. I will post pics of mine also.
