I have read in one of my books an arrangement of a deck that allows you to quickly access the duplicate of a selected card. At first I thought it was Tommy Wonder's Books of Wonder, but could not find it. It may be Giobbi's Card College (less likely) or possibly Simon Aronson. I will have to wade through. I vaguely remember that the introduction to it talks about a businessman's (or magician's?) wife, if that rings any bells. Do you recognise this? Where do I find it?
Thanks.

Do you mean the mate?
Either way, if you are talking about an arranged deck, why not just have everything together in pairs? whatever card they select either the next or previous card is the mate/dupe. |

Well, could be either mate or duplicate. But the thing is, I am trying to track down this particular description. I realise that pairs would do it, except that that would not allow you to freely show the faces first.

I'm not completely understanding the problem but maybe a rough-smooth deck would do the trick. No pun intended. I'm sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

I want to find the book reference (not another method) if anyone recognises it.

Tommy Wonder does use this but I don't know the reference off hand.

In the Books of Wonder Vol 1, there's an effect called Elizabeth III which uses two mene-tekel decks. This allows a spectator to name any card, you remove the card, but have a duplicate handy that gets loaded into a plastic folder. (I often use the improved version of this very clever trick - Elizabeth IV - which is on the Tommy Wonder DVDs from L&L)
Tommy Wonder's mene-tekel decks are quite easy to make just by taking two identical ordinary packs of cards, but I've heard of more elaborate versions that involve either rough/smooth or the Svengali principle that you can buy from magic dealers. Hope this helps. |

There it is. This is a great effect. Fools badly. Thanks for the reference Jameson

Yes - thanks for that. I did already find that in the book. However, it is not the one that I am thinking of. This is driving me crazy as I have this infuriating distant memory of reading it somewhere. I believe it is a deck of two identical 26-card stacks (or similar). I thought it was Tommy Wonder, but I have scoured each page of both books and can't find it.
Once again, I am not after alternative methods to be explained - I just want to know the book reference. Anyone recognise it?

I don't think it's what you want, but The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley (can't remember if it's #1 or #2) has a couple routines where you faro shuffle and the selected card finds its mate.
