That video is at the center of a large controversy on every magic and juggling board on the internet. He did that demo to "diss" a guy who did a 3 ball routine and got a standing ovation.

The guy has a temper and a horrible attitude. I believe he's left the major juggling organization and started his own.

Magicpitch I've seen the guy who does the three ball routine to that music it's something you never forget the simplicity is fantastic.

Are you saying the guy in this vid has a temper and attitude, he's only doing this to try and belittle that fantastic three ball routine?

Here is chriss' routine... (w/ 3 balls)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=......;pl=true

And fwiw, that 5 ball routine was one of the most amazing juggling things I've ever seen.

Though I can't be a "judge" of either man cause well, I have a hard time handling my balls in my routine, much less 5.

*cough*

I saw Garfield on the world juggling championships on ESPN 2 last year. What an elohssa.

Just goes to show: you can be a technical master, do beautiful tricks, and people will still hate you.

That is a character and the idea behind the Bliss Diss was that Bliss, who is a comic, was being called a great juggler, Jason is showing how a great juggler would do the routine. Not everyone hates Jason and not everyone thinks Bliss did a great job. Cool huh?

Curt, I totally agree. Steve, it's much more than just that. If one were to only want to show how a great juggler would do it, then he would simply do it, rather than bash the daylights out of Bliss, and even call your video the Bliss Diss. He clearly wasn't trying to show how a good juggler would do it, he was trying to be condescending, which he did very well. His words, written by him, were far, far more than just a demonstration. He has since replaced much of the harsh words originally posted with a much more moderated set of words.

I was talking to a juggler friend of mine and I was talking about the guy bashing it, telling him about it. His words were "I haven't seen or heard of what you're telling me, but by any chance was the guy's name Jason Garfield?". I said "Yes, that's the guy".

He said "Enough said, I should have known".

I believe I heard the Bliss 3 ball routine was done almost 20 years ago! So, this isn't a new item.

I saw this guy on a juggling competition on ESPN. When enterviewed, he said that he despises the idea of jugglers being entertainers, especially clowns. He sees juggling only as a very competitive sport.

I am an old fan of laid-back comedy jugglers like Charlie Frye and W.C. Fields....I am not impressed with juggling devoid of entertainment. It's like seeing how many notes you play on a piano faster than anyone else and hating music.

Best regards,

Well said Glenn! That made me think of Eric Clapton, one of the greatest in the world, yet some of his best material isn't impossible to play music, yet he makes it his own and you "feel" the music when he plays it.

Sure, there's plenty of room to disagree. I've never met Garfield, but the only times I've seen him he was a far from sympathetic character. Based on that single competition last year, I believe Garfield is the one of the best all-around technical jugglers in the world. I also feel that Bliss is a far more entertaining juggler.

If Garfield is playing a character, he chose the wrong character.

Garfield, great sport juggler but, is he an entertainer? I think Mario would steal his crowds if he was working the streets of Wales. Personally I'd rather watch Mario do his pole trick, or Chris Bliss do his three ball routine.

YMMV

Best,

I don't know.....I liked Mr Bliss's routine better.
Just because there are more balls involved doesn't mean that it's "better"
that is not to put down, however, the routine done by "Garfield" (is that his name?) His routine was more (as he say too) competitive sports routine than a juggling routine imho and in pure manual dexterity, I say Garfield beats him flat down... but really, Mr Bliss has a different kind of.. posture, just in the simple throws that he makes, I feel like I am watching a great work.

And... wouldn't you say that the routine Garfield did was a "rip-off" ? In terms of juggling routine...

It wasn't a "rip off", it was a piece done on purpose to mock the lesser juggling skills of Bliss.

Well... still,
If I took Lennart Green's FISM routine (okay purely hypothetical example) and made it a lot more technical and took out the personality /jokes / etcetc. .... wouldn't it still be called a rip-off?

Or do I have the wrong idea here... I mean I understand the purpose of the filming ... but its still a ripoff..

Funny,

Bliss could show his routine to mock the lesser entertainment skills and lack of originality of Garfield. Smile

Best,

Opp's, this clip was e-mailed to me I thought it was a bit of harmless fun. If I new it was more than that then I would not have posted it.

No worries Mario, it's great that everyone who's read this thread can get to see both sides for themselves and make up their own mind. Bliss has been on TV here a few times lately and he's amazed at how something that happened so long ago has taken on a life of it's own just recently.
