I am looking for a way to make a candle flame turn green for a few seconds. I got some results with a patina solution, but if the pool of melted wax gets too deep at the time the flame reaches the load it doesn't work. So that method is not reliable and will not work. Any suggestions?

Burning copper sulfide crystals will produce the green flame, but you need a way to deliver the crystals to the flame at a certain time, presumably several seconds or longer after the candle is lit. I would suggest a nichrome wire loop to hold the largest crystal you can find. The wire would be stuck on the back of the candle and swung into position after lighting the flame. Perhaps a small cash of the crystals could be wrapped up in a tiny flashpaper pouch, which would give you an additional flash just before the green flame. Another method of attaching the crystals to the wire might be to dit the wire loop in melted wax, then dip into the crystals and let the wax dry and harden before use. The wire loop will hold the load of crystals up above the pool of wax at the base of the wick, so it should work. Disclaimer: I haven't tried it in performance, butI have done similar things in teaching elementary chemistry classes, so I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

Barium nitrate gives a nice apple green. I'm having difficulty arriving at a method for having this be transient, though.

They would be corny on their own, but I s'ppose one could remove the wicks??? yes?? and then insert them somehow into a basic whit candle...dont think it would be so hard...

Baba, how about surrounding the candles with a faux exterior. Perhaps a metal lantern or mold and form wax around the candle itself so it can be easily replaced when it runs out. I've seen those candles and they're mini-lamps in a way because the body of the candle is a container of the fluid, not wax. So you could surround them with anything you wished.

They would be corny on their own, but I didn't think I had to point that out in a bizarre thread. I figured that most readers would have realized that they'd have to alter things to suit themsleves, I didn't want to be a wet-nurse.

You could try this: go to the hobby store and get a length of wick from the candle making supply part of the store. Soak the wick in the colored fuel of your choice, but in sections, coat it in wax then insert it into the candle "body" you wish to use. It will burn, down to the color part and change, then change back, or rather it should. The problem is in how the candle actually works, so finding a way to add a layer of chemical laden parafin to the proper section by time is difficult. I suppose you will not get consitent results.

Thanks for the suggestions. At least I have some new avenues to pursue. If I drill a hole, inject the wick with the color fuel, and fill the hole I think that might work. Thanks again.

Ohh Baba of light, Of course we have steel powder laying about in California, it is found in the Hardware store, in two forms, one is 000 steel wool for whatever arcane purpose woodworkers and the like put it to- one has but to put on gloves for keeping the hands pretty, and begin to crumble it...
The other location is in the section labeled Fasteners- for one can find a large spike nail, and a small *** file (I fear I do not know the true filial history of said file, so please do not chastise my words friends!!! ;} ) and shave by file some of the skin of said spike, why there should be powder for months within said item! be sure to ask for a steel and not an iron spike- and I use the big ones as they are easier to hold, unless one has a vise- (not a vice! that is a different matter altogether!) hogs and quiches k

What is the best chemical magic book out there? Looking for one that hopefully requires easy to get chemicals.
Thanks

Alas ceme20, many of the chemicals that used to be very common are harder to get these days.
Even little old Phenolphthalein - th estuff that is used as a pH indicator is not easily obtained any more, as it is used in making certain restricted drugs by people. Also we have the added idea that people need protection from themselves (I say chlorine in the gene pool is a right not a privledge) so many things that used to be common are now considered very dangerous- look at Mercurichrome, what we used to call "Monkey's blood" when I was little in school, no longer able to buy due tothe fear of mercury compounds stunting our brains or killing us! Now my cuts take three times as long to heal! The question might be better answered if you had more detail on what you want to do with the stuff, er, what effect are you after? k
